Hello

I'm Jerry and I'm in Southern Illinois. My daughter and I are wanting ot get into Flemishes and have read allot. We still need real world advise and fellow breeders to lean on and to help us. We are wanting to get a breeding program that is small and of high quality. We want to produce and show large balanced rabbits.

We have a local rabbit club and two local FG breeders. But the club is mostly of oldtimers and our views on rabbits differ and the Flemish breeers as well. They are tightlipped on advise and down right rude.

So any help and advise is welcome.

I'm on Facebook and my photos are able to be viewed by the public.

Hi Jerry, welcome to RO! :welcome1

I think you'll find this forum anything BUT tightlipped (tightfingered?), especially on the topic of Flemish Giants, LOL! Lots of breeders and fans here. Lots!

For instance, BlueGiants is one of the Rabbitry Mods, and you'll never guess her specialty. ;)

Thanks.....I think I've seen that avatar...the one with the huge white FG!

A friend of mine, almost like a father, was raised on a FG "farm" when growing up and his father had white FGs and they were huge! Several GC and BOBs and Jack even made his feed bill with selling a few breeding pairs.

We just want to make sure we are doing certain things right and a helping hand in picking and choicing stock along the way. Rabbit shows are far and few around here, but we traveled up to four hours for some of them in the past.

We like the FGs because of their size, temperment, and durability. We have had great pet rabbits in the past, but a crash into the wall or fall of the chair and the poor thing is DOA. Bambi, our almost sixteen week old fawn FG, has mastered the stairs, couch, and chair quite well on the contrast.

The "next" breed we would consider is the Checkered Giant. I just love the lean strong bodies and powerful hind legs!

Hello and thanks, her name is peppa and the grey one is georgie.
Same goes as your ginger flemish one is gorgeous, but i really like that your little boy can carry the white one around, that is soooo cute, my little boy would love to do that but he is a little heavy handed and loud yet as he is not 3 just yet lol xx

I don't breed FG but i did recently get a pair. They are 7 weeks old and they are so great. I sent u a request on facebook. And this forum is nothing but helpful i am sure the FG breeders will give u advice they are very nice and helped me when i had some questions.

I'd be happy to answer any questions you have about Flemish... :) and if you need a referral to a Flemish breeder in your area, I'd be happy to help. (PM me). A lot of the ol' time breeders are kind of "old school", and they have a wealth of knowledge from all their experience. But there are a number of breeders that wish to take that knowledge and move forward for the betterment of the Flemish (in particular) and rabbits in general.

Edited to add: The white boy, Arizona, in my avatar was only 16 lbs... not the biggest of my babies. But he was definitely my heart boy... I'm very blessed to have his grand daughter and great grand kids, and they all got his personality! :inlove:

I have to say that the Flemish world is quite diverse... some people are very free with advice and are willing to help in any way they can. There's a small cadre of people who are very closed-mouth and not willing to give people much assistance to get started. It's kinda strange... these are often the same people who are worried they're not attracting enough new breeders to the Flemish community to replace the ones who are retiring or dying off, but at the same time not doing a lot to encourage people who're interested. Haven't figured that one out yet.
