My Mawmaw bought me a 10 gallon fish tank today, which is a complete set up including, hood, light, filter, heater, rocks, plants, decorations, and tons of water care stuff. I set it up today and it looks pretty good, waters still a bit cloudy but should be good by tomorrow. I only want one fish so i desided to get a goldfish, i dont need the heater for that so thats cool i guess. But i am wanting on of those bubbley brain fat goldfish :) I like them!!

Can anyone help pick out names? boy and girl, the fish will become the gender i choose acording to it's name :)

Just a side note. The goldfish is called an oranda. Will average about 7-8" and goldfish have no stomachs and unless your cleaning it everyday religously a goldfish is not the best for a ten gallon tank.

there are plenty of other fish more suitable for that tank size...if you have fish questions let me know. I have two saltwater and raise discus as well.

:tears2: Oeeww...No gold fishy for me....

What kind of fish can i put in a tank that is not heated?
I have a Heater but i don't have a plug in available to plug it into...

Congrats on your first tank! I have 10 aquariums myself :)

Bettas need a heater. They can do ok without one as long as your house is very hot, but in reality they need heated water.

Do you have any plug close to the tank? you must if you have the filter plugged in. Buy one of those power bars. You can get them for cheap and they will let you plug everything in.

If you dont' want the heater there are some fish that will work. Zebra danios do ok in cooler tanks and are great starter fish. White cloud minnows are a cooler water fish and do best in unheated tanks. You could do a school of 8-10 in a 10g. IF you get a heater there are many more options.

But before you pick your fish you will want to learn about the nitrogen cycle and how to cycle your fish tank. Google "cycling aquarium" and you will get tons of info to read through. The basics are you need to add your fish very slowly, so the bacteria that eat the fish pee(ammonia) and turn it into nitrite and then the less deadly nitrate, can grow. Without those bacteria your fish can pollute the water and kill themselves. Also buy some aquarium water test kits of ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. You will need to test your water so you know when to clean the tank and if there is a problem.

IF you have any questions feel free to pm me or chat if you have msn. Good luck!

Bettas dont technically need a heater. i raised them and never used a heater unless i was breeding and had a female and only had the temp at 70f. thier just going to be less active in cooler waters.

You could also add a couple other fish. if you wanna do cold water look into danios. they have a naturally dyed danio that they dye with coral color. its a lot safer that the dye they use on other fish and the color stays without ever affecting the fish negatively. you can do a small school of 4-5 danios and a betta, just have a few plants to break up eye contact.

Could also do 3-4 male guppies-the prettier ones- with a betta but run the risk of an aggressive betta going after the guppies beautiful tails.

OR. 2-4 platies, all one sex ideallly so you dont get babies. guppies and platies are livebearers meaning about every month theyll pop out about a hundred kids(only a few make adulthood but still) but a betta in there will definetaly keep the population down :)

and like said above you want to cycle the tank too. dont use a fish to cucly is. get a peice of shrimp and throw it in there and the tank will cycle in about two weeks compared to the month to two that it could take.

I love Koi fish and always wanted a pond for them. My friends brother had them and they were so friendly following you and you can feed them by hand. Very cute.
