Hi, new here. I just got a junior french lop buck yesterday at the State Fair. We named him Nibbles. I've done lots of reading on bunnies and had one when I was a kid, but I still have some questions, of course, so if you can help with any of them, I would appreciate your input.

1. I'm training Nibbles to use a litter box. I'm using corn cob bedding in the litter box, and he is using it for the most part so far. I don't have any bedding in his cage, but I am lining it with newspaper. Is newspaper sufficient to line the cage with without messing up the litter box training? Also, are there any toxins in the newspaper I should be aware of, and thus remove it from Nibbles' cage if there are?

2. I haven't weighed Nibbles yet as he is still somewhat skiddish and getting adjusted, but when I do, does anyone know of a chart or something that can tell me how much he should weigh at different ages? Specifically, I'm trying to find out how much Nibbles should weigh in at each month or so in the first year because I would like to figure out about how old he is. I know he must be six months or less to be a junior buck, but that is all I know.

Well I thought I had more questions, and I know I do, but I can't think of them at the moment. So that all for now folks. Thanks for your help.

Newspaper is good, it's not toxic, they use vegetable inks and rabbits eat paper and trees all the time, although if he 'nibbles' the corn cob litter there is a remote chance it can cause digestive tract problems. I use wood stove pellets.

Here's the link to our sadly neglected 'Breeds' link for French Lops.

Congrats on your new addition. Hope this helps!

You shouldn't actually need to line his cage at all, especially if he's on a solid bottom. I know my two would just shred the newspaper if I lined their cage with it.

I'm not sure about the corn cob bedding. I think most of us use some variety of wood pelleted bedding. I use feline pine. I know woody pet is popular as is pelleted horse bedding. Different products are more or less available depending on your area.
