Ooooooh Ferrets! I've always wanted one. I've only held one once.

Aren't they Illegal in Ca though? Koda is the only ferret in my town(it is more like a village and everyone knows everybody) and when people see him they are scared at first but then fall in love with him :)

They are. I've only seen them in person a couple of times. People do sneak them in. My sister's friend had several years back and when her friend's crazy boyfriend stole them she couldn't do anything about it.
People are trying to make them legal, since a lot of people do have them. I'm only about 3 hours or so from the Nevada border. Easy to get one and bring it back. But I'd rather not. Just for safety's sake. I'd hate to have to give a ferret up if I am caught and reported, especially after getting attached to one.

I find it is stupid they are illegal in CA. They do make good pets. I know most see them as rodents(they are actually in the weasel family). Like Rabbits you have to ferret proof your home because they steal everything!

Oh I find it stupid too. We're the only state aside from Hawaii that it is illegal to have them. It's silly really cause people have them here. Pet stores carry ferret supplies.

I use to have two a few years back. My ferrets were holistic. Since ferrets are strict carnivores they NEED meat and the kibble out there for them is "hamster" food. They just don't have the systems to gain nutrition from processed kibble. I fed my two raw meat, bones, dead mice (snake grade), they ate insects as treats such as meal worms, crickets, wax worms etc. They also would get whole raw eggs and dehydrated meats as well. My males were twice the size of a kibble fed ferret. They had no smell due to their diet and their coats were plush. Unfortunately after I had divorced, my living arrangement could no longer support them. I rehomed them with another ferret home. I was part of a holistic ferret forum and mentored raw feedings. Here are some pictures of Hocus and Pocus.

I took them for walks to the beach and in the yard. They were harness trained.

This was their cage, I made all their bedding by hand. I had different sets for them. Going to do the same for my bun.

they can have raw food? i never give mine that

Ferrets are strict carnivores by nature. They are so closely related to weasels that they still have the same digestive system which does not digest plant nutrients like that of a rabbit. Research it. You don't have to give your ferret that, for me personally I cringe at the kibble made for ferrets and the fact that people feed their ferrets cat food as well. Ferrets are relatively new pets and the animal food companies quickly came up with horrible kibbles not really thinking about what they truly need. You can also give your ferret dehydrated meats if you don't want to feed raw.

Here is the forum I use to be a part of which educates on raw fed diets. You'll find tons of information about why raw feeding a ferret is 100% good for them or any other carnivore for that matter.

Marshall is the largest ferret mill. Majority of ferrets sold on the market come from them. They have had a ton of controversy about how they handle ferrets in terms of their pens, feeding them, and age of letting them go to stores.

I know they are a big controversy but there are NO ferret breeds, rescues close to me plus it wasn't up to me where we got him from. Any way I will love him. Koda doesn't like raw but I turn it into a soup and he gets it that way. I have to add in extra stuff for him though to eat it. He is also on a kibble diet and he has actually gotten a lot bigger and his coat is very healthy. It can also depend on what your ferret is fed kibble wise.

I had a ferret before Koda and my mom has had 3 ferrets and so has my aunt. They were never fed Raw but they got HUGE and were very healthy. i also want an Angora ferret :) They get HUGE!! But that will never happen.

Yea that's the sad thing about them. Oh so you tried raw? Yea some ferrets don't take to raw diets right away and sometimes not at all. I just wish they made a better kibble for them, but the market for ferret food is not as big as dog and cat food markets. Totally even if a ferret is part raw diet (whether in a soup or from the source straight up) you will see a size difference amongst other things. Straight up kibble fed ferrets are more prone to adrenal disease too which was another reason I went for raw diets. I made sure I placed my ferrets in a raw fed home too, which worked out great. I do miss them, especially hocus the darker colored one in my pictures. Pocus was a biter.
