Over the past week, I've been changing the bunsfood. Sampson came to me eating Blue Seal Show Hutch Deluxeand my young buns were eating Mazuri mixed with Manna Pro, my olderguys were eating Kaytee Timothy Complete mixed with MannaPro. Well, when I went to TSC last weekend, they didn't havethe Manna Pro, but had the Blue Seal and it was cheaper and more in abag and from everything I read, it seemed like a good food. So, I got it. I've been changing everyone slowly and it isgoing fine.

Tonight, I came up with a question though. I was reading apamphlet I picked up about the Blue Seal foods when I boughtit. In the pamphlet it says: "Show Hutch Deluxe is anextruded feed. Extruded feeds weigh significantly less thanpelleted feeds and should be fed by weight and not byvolume." I don't have a scale that weighs in ounces, I'vebeen needing to get one, but if I'm going to get one, I want to be ableto weigh the buns, so it needs to weigh up to 20 lbs (forSampson). My questions are:

Until I get the scale, how much should I feed them?

Does anyone know where I could get a good scale for this?

Thanks,

Jen

Is there a Loews store nearyou , a Sams Club or equivelent theygenerally have scales that weigh from 1pound to i believe 50 pounds ,I was thinking maybe a digitalbaby scale also mightwork , baby scalesweigh ounces as well as pounds,

Im not sure what theymean by extruded feed i havenever heard of that term before , Doesthe feed look different than pellets?I dont get feed from Blue Seal , so i amnot familiar .

Yes, it looks different. It's almost little roundballs. It does seem very light. I have a bin I putmy food in and I filled it (put the leftovers in the freezer), itdoesn't weigh nearly as much.

If you don't want to wait....Stick (ruler), two little plastic cups like for catsup, string to make loop handles in each cup, fulcrum point to balance cups. Hang cup from either end of stick, place 1 ounce regular food in one cup and pour enough Blue Seal to achieve equilibrium. Once correct ration of Blue Seal determined, pour that into a properly sized measuring cup for future reference.

This is a most interesting point you bring to light and it may affect more people that anyone is aware of. I have always simply used a measuring cup to determine the one ounce of pellet per pound of bunny that I use as my feeding standard. If I ever "weighed" it, I sure don't remember doing so. I wonder if many of us "short change" our buns?

Used Blue Seal for a couple of years for it came highly recommended by a local breeder, but I was disappointed in the amount of "fines" it produced and the buns' relative disinterest in it.A switch to Purina Advanced Show Formula (blue bag) produced more bunny interest but necessitated buying 50 lb bags of it and the subsequent repackaging and freezing into smaller 10 lb lots. The Purina had extra oil and yucca extract, if memory serves me correctly.
