I just got a 5 week old bunny yesterday- yes, I know that is too young to be sold but we didn't know it was so young. He/she was with another bunny that looked around 8/9 weeks, so we thought he was older but we were told that one was just big. We didn't know until we had bought him, but we figure it's better I have him then some non-rabbit-savvy person, right?

I honestly have no idea how to feed him. The youngest bunny I've gotten was 8 weeks((when they go on free pellets/hay)), so I don't know what to do for a younger one. Should he be on free pellets too, and does he need something like a milk replacer? Can he eat hay?

And, because I know everyone loves pictures, here is one of him. XD He looks really big, but the bars are maybe 1/2 inch apart and he fits in my hand. He's also supposed to be an English Spot, but I don't think so. :p

I would suggest offering mainly timothy and/or alfalfa hay for the first few days. VERY limited pellets, maybe around 1/4 cup, just until he gets used to his new surroundings and the change in diet. But make sure during this time that he has unlimited hay available.

I never offer unlimited pellets, at any age, as it can cause enteritis. But usually by about 6-8 weeks, he may start finishing off a 1/2 cup depending on breed/size.

Rolled oats are a good treat and supplement for young bunnies too. I would definitely not introduce any greens or veggies at this point since he's so young and (I'm assuming) now on a sudden change in diet from what he was fed before to what he'll have now. Keeping pellets limited and fiber (hay) high, you should be able to avoid any digestive upset and slowly bring him back to a healthy pelleted diet.

As always, JMPO. :)

I have read that alfafa based hay is really good for young bunnies. I think they start to eat solid food about that age but it might be part food/part milk. Maybe look up a breeder in your area and give them a call/email? Most breeders I've met/talked to are very helpful and friendly and have great advice. Good luck with your bun.

Okay, thank you! :D

He was actually on Purina before he came to me, which is what I feed. So that should help him a little bit in the transition. :)
