Hello,

My 6 year old rabbit's normal vet can't see us until 16 days from today. He has one eye that is leaking something clear and sticky for the past week. It's not to the point where his cheek looks wet. There's no nasal discharge or sneezing. He's eating plenty of hay, drinking, and pooping normal. He finishes his pellets before each feeding (1 tablespoon twice a day). However, there have been times where he hasn't quite finished them as quick as normal. This normally indicates something is off but we very recently recovered from a paw injury and GI stasis. He is behaving fairly normal and no teeth grinding.

Assuming this could require anesthesia for an x-ray and tooth examination/trimming, would you risk going to a vet with some but far less rabbit expertise? (The backup vet mostly sees dogs/cats as far as I can tell)

Advice? Would it be dangerous to wait?

Thanks

If the discharge is totally clear the first thing I would do is try and flush the eye and eyelids. Normal Saline is the best thing to use if you can burrito him and lift the upper and lower lids to flush in there. Could simply be something in there irritating it.

Then yes any vet should be able to get him burritoed and do standard eye tests like staining, tear test, cataracts, etc as its the same process for other animals.

Xrays wouldnt necessarily be the first thing I would jump too. Plenty of things to look at first. As for anesthetic and xrays it depends how comfortable this other vet is with rabbits.

Thanks. I will flush it first and then see the other vet next week if it's not improving.
