So Kim put the two dutch rabbits (Blue) (Harliquin) in the evans software to see what they would produce and we got some strange colors.

Color Genes Unlinked Linked

Castor/(brown) Grey A-B-C-D-E 29.35% 31.46%

Black aaB-C-D-E 29.35% 31.46%

Opal A-B-C-ddE10.08% 10.63%

Blueaab-C-ddE10.08% 10.63%

Ruby-Eyed White ?-?-cc?-?-?-?- 09.48% 06.67%

Amber/ Agouti-ChocolateA-bbC-D-E04.35% 03.33%

Chocolate aabbC-D-E 04.35% 03.33%

Lynx A-bbC-ddE 01.48% 01.25%

LilacaabbC-ddE 01.48% 01.25%

So what is this all about, how can there be REW, Lynx, Opal, and Lilac?

Also what does Linked and Unlinked mean?

It is pretty cool, you just put in their pedigrees and out pops the approximate colors in the offspring of the two rabbits, and most of the time it's accurate.

Oh wow thats neat. I am not so sure how you would get some of those colours. Maybe if some are in the rabbits lines and all.

That's what you could get from breeding a Harlequin to a Blue ;)

Although, I'm sure it's been done before....but yeah those are some weird colours.
There's no such thing really as "castor" in Dutch either; Castor is different than chocolate ;)

I just don't understand it. :dunno

I took the Caster (brown) Gey as meaning we might get some grey dutches. I don't know though. Hmm, I guess we just have to wait and see what we get when the time comes.

The Evans software program calculates the probability of inheriting linked genes on the same chromosome - for example the B and C series. Because B & C are linked, an individual rabbit is likely to pass those two series on together, rather than by random chance of chromosomes crossing over.

The more you know about genetics, the more you can tweak the program to accurately calculate outcomes. Since lower C series genes are very unlikely in Dutch, you can fill in "CC" in the C series. You can also rule out other recessive possibilities if you know your rabbits don't carry those varieties.

Dutch rabbits do come in other varieties when colors are crossed, so Opal (blue gray) is very possible when mixing grays and blues. We can rule that out with the blue x harli mix because the harli pictured doesn't appear to be an agouti. If that is so, any agouti varietywould beimpossible. Lilacs are possible from blue x choc mixes. REW's can pop up if someone mixed Florida Whites into a line to improve body type and Lynx would be produced through gray x chocolate x blue crosses. I've also seen goldens from agouti x tort crosses.

Castor/Chestnut would be "Gray" in Dutch, however that is assuming your harli is an agouti - which I don't think that it is.

:shock:That confused me but the whole genes thing is so intresting.
