I had to have a female rat euthanized several months ago, Mia,bevause of an enormous abdominal tumor.

She had a very young cagemate ,Eva , I just found curled up in herwooden box dead. She had been perfectly helathy 2 days ago as I hadtaken her out to play and she was just fine. She was less than a year.

There are only 2 things I did differently in the past couple days.
I bought some branch bites from petco whoch are made from fruitwoodtwigs of a gooseberry tree and give her a few which she had chewed.
I also gave her a piece of ripe banana 2 days ago which she had never had before.
I just read that green banana is to toxic but this was ripe.
She had no tumors , respiratory problems or anything else that I can see that was wrong.

She ate the rat blocks for food.

Did I accidentally poisin her. ?:(

It could have been a number of things. Did youcheck on her since the two days before you took her out? Rats godownhill so fast that sometimes it is impossible to notice theirillness and do something about it before they can't be saved.

Where did she come from? A pet store? She may have had a stroke or aheart attack.....you never know because you don't know the familyhistory.

I am very sorry for your loss. I lost my precious heart rat on 11/07/06:(.

She came from a petstore.

I last had her out on Sat .night and she was crawling up my sleeves andup on my neck and going 100 mi / hr. which is normal for her. I didn'tpay much attn to her on Sun as it was Easter and I was gone.

Yesterday I noticed that she was not coming out of her house to greet me but I didn't process the thought.

I placed some food in her cage last night and she was in her little wooden box sleeping.
It isn't normal for her to not come out when I put food in so I peekedin her box to make sure she was OK and noticed that she wasbreathing. I watched her breaths which were not labored.

I think I gave her banana which was really ripe on Sat. night.

She was only about 6 months old and I worked hard to tame her as she used to bite.
I really loved her and wish so much that I knew what happened.

She was beige and wht with brown eyes and a sweet little face.
If they are sick for awhile I adapt to the possibility of loss but when they die like this it really upsets me.

I never said goodbye.

That is the reason why I do not have ratsanymore. They give so much joy to us in their short little lives...butcan die so unexpectedly. She may have just had a stroke, heart attack, inner ear infection, choked, or some little hidden cause to why shedied because of her poor breeding from being a pet store ratty.

I hope she did many popcorns to the bridge and is up there hanging out with my heart rattie, Fayl.:rainbow:

May your heart heal soon:hug2:.

Thanks...I don't know if I will get more rats.

It is a shame that they don't live longer..they are so intelligent..shewould look at me and you could see the intelligence in her eyes.
I guess maybe I'll get a few more sometime but probably I'll wait until we get a few at the shelter.

I had hamsters a long time ago and had to :(give them up because I hadan entire family and they all died about the same time...way too muchgrief..

I feel your pain. I am so happy that I have bunnies again...as they live longer and still bring a ton of joy into my life.
