There's been off and on discussion about Ethoxyquin in pet foods on a gerbil forum I'm on and whether it's good or bad. I rather be on the safe side and if the food contains Ethoxyquin, I don't use it.

Here are a few links:

I haven't done lots of research into it really but from what I've read so far, I, once again, rather be safe then sorry. ;)

Anyway, does anyone else know about it?

I know it was originally used to preserve rubber and has been linked to cancer when humans are exposed to large quantities of it.

I wouldn't trust it. I won't feed foods to my pets that have ethoxyquin in it. Kaytee has it in it (ugh, KT...a terrible brand and company!).

I definitely prefer to give my animals food that doesn't contain the questionable preservative. However, I know some people have to feed it because it's the best food available in their area and shipping a food without Ethoxyquin is too expensive for their budget, which I totally understand. There are plenty of rabbit owners that feed Kaytee Timothy Complete, their rabbits live long healthy lives without developing cancer.

For me, since I have the option of buying other brands, I don't feed it. I just prefer not to have the worry or deal with headache. It really is a personal choice but I suggest everyone looking into feeding Kaytee rabbit pellets (or any other food containing the preservative) to do their research on Ethoxyquin and make an informed decision on if they are comfortable feeding it.

I have that choice so I don't buy it! :)

But I totally understand about not being able to get it without. Ordering a 2-4lbs bag of gerbil food online would be totally NOT worth it. With shipping, it's crazy priced!
