Time goes by fast.

Ansel is my witchy-bun. She, with others, were taken in when a local (at the time) shed/barn setup caught fire when the owners were burning trash in their barrels.

Ansel came with papers. She was born in '01.

She's never been very tame or stable but she's beautiful and very happy in her own sense.

I do have concerns about her. In the time she's been her she did bond with Ibimi, my dutch - but I lost Ibimi August 31 after long struggles with her obesity - a condition she was in before I acquired her.

With Ansel being born in May of 2001, she is "getting up there", perhaps.

She shows signs of slowing down, not jumping as much, not climbing in her 3 level pen as much - not even beating her stuffies up (stuffed toys) like she used to.

She eats well, drinks well and poops. She's been vet checked very recently and while there is nothing *wrong* to diagnose her with, she's -old- and the vet feels she is naturally slowing down.

There haven't been major changes in the house other than losing her bond mate (thats big, I know) and I have moved her pen across the room, away from an air conditioning vent because she seems a little stiff at times when she wakes up after sleeping for a while.

Other than her somewhat stiff posture on occasion, older age and attitude (attitude has been the same since Day 1) - I don't see a lot wrong with her per se, but sometimes she just catches me off guard.

What can I do to help keep or make her comfortable? Are feeding/housing requirements changing as she gets older?

In all, for those of you with older bunnies - how does/has age impacted them and you overall?

What signs do I need to look for, considering her age, if anything were to go south with her health and/or well being?

Benson is blind, so he can't have shelves in his NIC pen, anyway...but I would definitely take away the shelves in your girl's cage. I would worry about her getting shaky and falling. Benson is very shaky, how about your girl?

I also try to keep a lot of "padding" down on the floor of Benson's cage, since he sleeps a lot and his bones are old. He has a (in this order) woven rug, twice folded bed sheet, fleece, another twice folded bed sheet, and another woven rug. I like to keep it nice and comfy for him....and he doesn't mind!

Some say to feed alfalfa hay & pellets to older buns. I have not done this, as I worry Benson will get fat because he doesn't play...just sleeps a lot.
