My rabbit itches his ears and face. Should i be concerned? I looked in his ears for crust and blockage but didn't find anything! Could it be fleas or do rabbits sometiems scratch themselves?
Gus never showed any signs of fur mites, but we did find some fleas on him. Mostly he was just itchy all the time and grumpy.
Ifyour rabbit seems overly itchy, you can get him treated with Revolution or Advantage. You'll need a vet to prescribe it, though. Ivermectin has shown to be effective too, but it can cause a fatal reaction in bunnies of with Dutch breeding, but should be safe for a Rex.
If your rabbit does have ear mites,
There is a home remedy. I've tried this before and it worked!
I used extra virgin olive oil. I gently rubbed some into the crusts with a q-tip. I basically covered all the crusts, and let it go for about 10 minutes. then i would try to scrape some of the loose crusts from the ear mites. But don't try to force it off, let nature do that. repeat every 2-3 days. But since i have a busy schedule, i did it on the weekends and my rabbit is now ear mite free
Otherwise, get Revolution for cats. It has ivermectin that treats ear mites.
:yeahthat: If there are fleas, they usually leave their feces around the ears, pits and other protected areas and are easy to spot. Most our rabbits are groomers with no fleas or mites.
Smell her ears. It could be an infection, and I don't consider that anything to mess with after having one die from an ear infection. Maybe get it swabed to be sure if its mites, or infection. It only costed us about $45 at our vet, so its not a huge expendature. And the meds aren't expensive for that eiter.
If you think mites, try some mineral oil at the base of each ear. Massage the bottom of the ear for it to go down.
