Well, I just got a call from the vet. Olivia's test results came back positive for E.Cunniculli. I just went and picked up her meds. What exactly is E. Cunniculli? Are there any permanent effects this will have on her? Whats the easiest way to get this medicine in her? Im so upset about this...i dont understand how she got it:dunno

I would go back to your vet and ask for a (FREE) consultation about your rabbit. Your vet shouldn't have just said "Here is the diagnosis, come pick up the meds". They should sit down with you and explain the disease, the treatment, the effects, etc. Be nice, but be firm. It's the vet's job to tell you all this information, you shouldn't have to worry and look it up online by yourself.

Good luck! :)

Thanks Mandy. I was definitely a little disappointed by it. They called me to come get the meds 2 hours before the place closes. Well it takes me almost an hour to get there. And the receptionist is the one that handed me the meds. I asked her if she could get someone to talk to me about how to give her the medicine and what all I need to do...and her response was "all the doctors are busy right now, you can call in the morning." Pretty ridiculous and rude...

Many rabbits are exposed to EC sometime during their life (even before birth), but symptoms may or may not develop during the rabbits lifetime. The immune systems of rabbits may keep the infection under control. Other rabbits with EC that come under stress (physical or otherwise) may develop symptoms ranging from seizures, cataracts, weakness, paralysis, head nodding, uncontrolled eye movements, behavioral changes, or head tilt.

I have a rabbit who had violent seizures over a 24-hour period. I suspected EC and the test came back positive. She was on panacur for 4 weeks and symptoms have not returned.

What medication did they give you? If the rabbit resists taking the medication it sometimes works to put it on a piece of banana or other favored food.

Olivia had a seizure a couple of weeks ago and the Emergency vet i took her to said they tested her for it and it came back negative. But they gave me the results that night. So i dont know what kind of test they did on her for the results to come back that quick. I took her to a rabbit vet last Monday because she was showing signs of possibly having another seizure, so they tested her again and I got the results today. They put her on Panacur for 28 days

Hopefully then you will be as fortunate as I was with my EC rabbit and if you give the Panacur for 4 weeks you will have no more symptoms show up.

 Praying for her! E. Cuniculi isn't ever fun to deal with. =P Any other symptoms? Watch out for head tilt, as it's pretty common for EC.

Nope, no others symptoms that I know of. I have noticed that she has been shaking her head a little bit. But her ears were checked when we were in there and they said her ears were fine. I dont know if that is a symptom or not. Right now Im just dealing with her having a bit of an upset stomach with this Panacur

Testing for EC in a rabbit will almost always come back positive as most rabbits have it. There should be at least two of the same blood testing done about two weeks apart. If the Titers in the second blood test show higher than the first then its problematic.
Were there other symptoms?
Panacur for 28 days is a good remedy but you should start it as soon as possible.

She was having seizures. She was tested once and it was negative and the second test was positive. The tests were done at 2 seperate vets though. She has already been started on the Panacur. I gave her the first does yesterday.

EC doesn't cause head tilt. Ear infections that go untreated cause head tilts. Head tilts are caused by a middle ear infection, not EC.

Both rabbits I lost to EC did not have head tilt. The initial symptoms were incontinence and dragging the left rear leg. Gradually both lost the ability to control their hind quarters and then the ability to stand. The disease progresses from there.

I would have the ears checked again. An ear infection can lead to head tilt.

Just to add that the EC titer needs to be done over a period of time. One test is inconclusive. Also have a kidney panel is a good indication of there is problem. Another symptom is developing kidney stones and bladder sludge.

Both EC and inner/middle ear infection can lead to head tilt. If the EC parasite goes to the middle earhead tilt may occur in response to pus and fluid from thegranulomas caused by EC.

However it is true that if a rabbit tests positive for EC that does not necessarily mean that neurological symptoms are from the EC - they could be from a middle/inner ear bacterial infection. Sometimes vets treat for both since it is difficult to determine which could be causing the head tilt.

Good link about head tilt from the House Rabbit Society. I really relied on this pretty heavily when my bunny had head tilt.

For my bunny, we did the titer and it came back negative for E. Cuniculi (we got a copy of the bloodwork).

As in the case with my bunny, it was an ear infection which caused her head tilt, but it can easily be either one.

Long story short, just so you all know, I wasn't trying to get this topic off suject talking abouthead tilt(lol) :juggle ..more just saying to watch for that if the bunny has EC. Defnitly not saying that in every case you'll actually see head tilt in an EC bunny.

This and even than some believe that you should do more than two test.
