So lately I've been having some seriously dry skin. Mostly on my hands. It's winter and I wash my hands a lot and use sanitizer so all that really drys them out.

I put lotion on but it seems like any lotion I use it burns/stings for a few minutes before "calming". I've tried so many different kinds!

Does anyone else get really dry skin? And if you do what do you do to relieve it?

I get super dry skin on my hands in the winter. I also get mild eczema in some small areas on my hands, so those areas get drier. There are two products that really help me.
I really like Burt's Bees products for dry skin, they work really well for me. Last winter I tried their shea butter Hand Repair Creme. It has shea butter, sesame oil, and cocoa butter in it. I don't care for the scent of it, but it soaks in really well and makes your hands really soft. It's a little expensive, but you don't need much of it at a time. It's pretty easy to find, lots of stores carry BB products now. (Target, Walmart, some grocery stores, Whole Foods, Borders, probably lots more!)

If you have dryness around your nails, I also like BB's lemon butter cuticle cream. For the hands, I do love the scent of the Banana and Beeswax hand cream, but I find it to be a little, well, waxy, if I use too much of it. They have an Almond Milk one that's nice, too.)

I recommend trying a nice rich hand cream, probaby anything with a lot of shea butter in it is good. I find it helps to put it on right before bed, then put on thin cotton gloves. The increased heat on your hands helps the cream to soak in. (I do it a couple times a week in the winter, and find it helps me. Other people I know don't have improved results doing this.)

Oh, and I'm not affiliated with Burt's Bees in any way, I just like to use their products. :)

I do the cotton gloves too! I have some stuff my mom gave me and I'll do that. The stuff doesn't burn/sting my hands but the thing is it doesn't really soak in fast so my hands are covered in it and it doesn't work out real well during the day!

My mom had some extra Vaseline to try (I don't know why I never tried that before!). If that doesn't work I will definitely try the burts bee's or something with a lot of shea butter in it. Thanks! :biggrin2:

I know this might be obvious, but all that washing and use of hand sanitisers could be making your skin very sensitive. I've made my face like that from washing it too often - now even colourless and odorless cremes for sensitive skin burn and hurt.

I get really REALLY dry hands in winter and I find olive oil quite good by just rubbing a wee bit in quite often also making something like pasta were they're covered in it for awhile quite nice to.:)

Aaaah my skin is so dry at the moment too! :panic:

I do the cotton gloves and moisturiser thing- I don't buy any expensive hand cream, just something that is quite thick and rich- has to smell nice too lol, cos you're going to be smelling it all night! :p

I'm having problems with my face this year. It is sooo dry and even my Clinique moisturiser isn't cutting it this year.... I need to go out and find a good face mask or something I think.... But at the moment it's so dry that even after I moisturise when I put foundation on it shows up all the little dry bits... :X

I have extremely dry skin right now on my feet due to an injury. I'm using Corn Huskers Lotion and it seems to be doing the job. The bottle says it's a 'Heavy Duty Hand Treatment". It feels oily at first but soaks right on into your skin without an oily feeling. You can find it at Wal-Mart and I'm sure any drugstore. We were able to locate some at a small local pharmacy. It's in a simple 7 ozclear bottle with a yellow label and lit. Simple appearance and does the job!

if you wear rubber gloves while cleaning, doing dishes ect....put lotion on right before you put on the gloves, the warmth from the warm water will help it soak in..

use vaseline, saran wrap (or plastic gloves) and then the cotton glove over it....that will help as well

I use gold bond healing lotion for the actual dry areas...

I have Psoriasis so most of my dryness is from that....the trick is to keep it moist to prevent cracking

When my kids had excema thier ped told me to use Eucerine on them, i didnt like it cause i thought it was too greasy, i hate greasy lotions, but supposidly eucerine is good for excema.

If you are sesitive to lotions with scents i use luberderm, i even use it on the baby with no reaction, it isnt greasy and soaks right into your skin.

I have heard that olive oil is great for dry skin, but olive oil it too expensive to be rubbing in my hands, lol :biggrin2:

I also live in Wisconsin and can sympathize with your seasonally dry skin. I was born with red hair (it's more blonde now) and very, very sensitive skin. Hand sanitizer doesn't help much. Only use it when absolutely necessary :)

I get the white container of Nivea lotion (there is a blue tub or a white tub). The blue stuff is really thick and oily, but works well on your feet if they get dry. It smells terrible, though. The white tub is more of a thick lotion. It doesn't have much of a smell, but it doesn't just smell like goop.

You can get Nivea at Wal*Mart and Walgreen's near me. Those are the only two stores that I've actually looked for them in, so they might be elsewhere. The tub is 6.8 ounces for about $5 at Wal*Mart. Right now, they have pink flowery designs on the tub, too, so they may not be 100% white. ;)

Avea oil-free aloe and olive lotion is awesome stuff for face moisturizing, imo.

I also love lubrederm lotion.. no oil or grease, just absorbs right in and makes your skin feel great.

Burt's Bee's Milk and Honey lotion smells fabulous and moisturizes well.

Pure coconut oil is excellent for face hands especially for leaving on overnight, makes skin super soft. And it smells like fresh coconuts, absorbs fast and is pretty cheap. Won't sting cracked skin.

If your skin is really raw and cracked, go buy a bottle of liquid Vitamin E capsules and rub some Vitamin E on the sore/dry areas.. it is a little sticky but will heal the sore/dry spots very quickly and absorbs pretty fast.

Hand sanitizer is almost 100% alcohol, so when you use it a lot it breaks down all the protective oils in your skin and dries it out completely. Also avoid antibacterial soaps/detergents for a while and use regular bar soap, antibacterial soaps really dry out your skin too.

It would be easier on your skin to carry around a bottle of hydrogen peroxide and splash that on your hands for disinfecting when needed.. it is highly disinfectant, but easier on your skin.

I tend to get dry skin through the winter, and have found that The Body Shop's Shea Body Butter works best for me. It's made for very dry skin and works great.

I also like The Body Shop's hemp hand protector. Another one I'll only use at night, it's a little stinky. (When I put it on, Jason always asks if I let some hippies in the house.) Also a little pricey, but you only need a tiny bit. (I bought a full size tube 2 years ago, still have half of it left.) Works wonders for me.

I carry a tube of Glysomed hand cream with me and use it a couple times during the day. I was getting dry cracked skin at the tips of my fingers and thumb. Sometimes I use the cotton gloves or the thin surgical gloves at night.

I just seen something on the tv about dry skin and they said dont take hot showers, make your shower cool. When you get out lightly tap dry your skin but not dry all the way and apply lotion to your skin. The lotion that they used was Eucerine, and they said that you should reapply lotion every twenty four hours.

My favorite thing for dry skin? Bag Balm. That, or any kind of horse hoof cream works WONDERFUL!!

:biggrin2:

But I know what you mean...my skin's been really dry this year, too. :grumpy:

I have cuts ALL over my hands from the dryness...they are cracking terribly. It hurts to move my hands...it is like my skin is not flexible :(.

I really need to get some cream that really works. I have tried all kinds and nothing works for me.

Do you guys have Vaseline Intensive Care over there? I use that hand cream.... it's great!

I have to go and find some better face cream later. I have to! My face feels like sandpaper, is all red and blotchy and if I wear makeup it just looks awful! :X
