Hello,

I have a sweet little hollendale lop bunny. He is 7 years old and I am deeply in love with this little guy. His name is Sugar.

Over the past 7 years he has had to major surgerys for blockages. One was about two years ago that was a sphelt something and one block July 12, 2012 due to scar tissue from the first surgery. I was told this is common.

He has also had an ear surgery about a year ago and it started with drooling. We got that fixed and he has been fine.

He started drooling last week and I took him to the vet right away and they broke the teeth off in the back to get the points off and gave us an antibiotic. Off we went. That was Wednesday 10-17-12 and I thought everything was fine. But then today I gothim out of the cage to let him run around likeusual and give him someparsley. He is running around fine eating fine and looking greatexcept he has this green spot around his mouth like someone hit him with a paint gun. Could it just take a little while to stop all of the drooling? I expected it to stop all together right away after we got his little teeth taken care of.

Could anything else be wrong than a tooth problem? I am so worried. I will of course call the vet first thing Monday and get him back in right away. Just looking for a weekend answer.

Signed worried mother and sugar..........

It's good that he's already on antibiotics. Did your vet mention whether or not the sharp points on the teeth had caused any sores inside his mouth? If so, it could be that those are just sore and causing a little bit of drooling and if that's the case, then the drooling will probably stop in a few days as it heals. There could also still be a tooth that is causing problems, or maybe an abcess. Unfortunately with tooth problems, it's really only the vet that is going to be able to do something. If you have metacam, you could maybe give some of that to help with any inflammation and pain.

The vet didn't metion any places that had a sore. I wonder if he has to get used to the way the teeth feel after they werebroken off. As soon as the vet handed him back to me (still a little groggy). He had a little blood coming from his mouth. I freaked. The vet told me it was normal because when theyclip the teeth off it has a root and it will bleed. I was wonderingif that would cause him to still drool a little. The vet told me he wouldstart eating later that evening or the next morning. I packed him a salad before we went to the vet and when I got him in the car he started eating a straw of parsley right away. My friend and I took him to a restraunt and when we got inside I hadSugar in his stroller. I gave him more salad in the stroller and he was eating like nothing ever happened. So we all had dinner and went home. The vet cleaned up his mouth before we left because we were going out after the visit. His mouth looked fine Thursday and Friday. Then thisafternoon I noticedhis mouth looked likea green paintball had hit him again in the right side.

Sugar was only drooling for about 3 days before I took him to the vet. So I hope we caught it fast enough. I am right on top of anything going on with him. I will take him back Monday or Tuesday depending on when my vet is back in the office. I do have metacam and will give him some so he is comfortable. I have him out still and he is acting purrrrrfect just the drooling. I hope he is just healing and it will go away on its own. I will still take him to the vet for follow up to make sure nothing else is going on. I take Sugar everywhere I go he is like the baby I was never blessed with.

If it is an abcess, after the meds are taken, do they have to pull the tooth?

Could it be something else going on (more serious)? Hope not that is my worry also.

Wonder why the vet didn't take x-rays of his little mouth? Should I have that done?

I don't know about pulling teeth. How much do you trust your vet? It seems a little strange to me that he would cut your rabbits teeth instead of grinding them down. I understand grinding is the preferred method now because the risk of fracturing the teeth when you clip them. Yeah, you may need to get an xray if the drooling doesn't stop, to see if there is something else going on in there. If you don't have a preference for this vet, I would try and find one that seems more knowledgable about rabbits.

OK, Thank you.

Do you have any idea if something else is going on with my Sugar?

I just don't want to miss something. I will loose it if we can't fix this.

Thank you

Sugars mom :)

I'm glad to hear you're taking her in to a different vet. I would just keep up with the antibiotics until you get her into the vet, in case there is any sort of infection. Did they give you a probiotic too. That's good to give when you're doing antibiotics. If they didn't give you any, I would get some when you go see this other vet.

All the vet gave me to give him was doxycycline antibotics. No x-rays. I am going to have x-rays done tomorrow or wednesday in columbus. Expert bunny vets. I will never let anyone else ever break his teeth off again. I had no idea the vet handled teeth that way. I'm not very happy about that. The vet in columbus said somthing about triming. Not sure what that means but he doesn't need anything done now that the points are gone. I hope the sharp edges didn't cut his little mouth. I guess we will know what is going on soon.

Do you know of anything else that could be going on other than teeth. I had a drooling problem before but the greens didn't stick to his fur. He had an abcess in his ear and needed surgery. The guy in centerville, oh did that surgery. It went great. That is why I trused him to work on Sugs teeth.

Sugar and I will be going to Columbus, OH bunny pros for the follow up and x-rays.

Guess what? : 0 )
When I came home from work today. His little mouth was not wet! Yea!!!!!
I spoke to two vets today and the one that broke the teeth off ( He will never do that again, by the way)
Said it may takea few days after they do that to stop the drooling. So I guess he was correct.

I still have the appointment with the vet in columbus on Wed I will cancel when I am sure he has completely stopped drooling.

Thank you so much for your support.
Kara and Sugar baby...... LOL

Did the vet who did her teeth break off the points or the teeth? He may have done you a favor and saved you some money. It IS a controversial procedure, but I tend to back it.

I can get Pipp's spurs broken off just with diet. When she starts having problems, I give her all harder foods -- kale, grass (if she'll eat it -- she won't eat hay), apple peel, etc, and the points break off. I haven't had to pay for a dental in years, and that was after procedures every few months.

There is just as much risk with the dremel tool as chipping the spurs off. Aggressive burring can cause cuts and disturb underlying tooth root infection.

But if you can afford it, always good to be cautious and check for infection. X-rays are great because of his past infection and the propensity of tooth root and other infections to travel around the head.

Oh no, I went to the vet yesterday just to have Sugar checked out.
They looked at his little teeth. One tooth the first vet had broken off the point and left the rest still raised on the side. The next tooth was fractured. That is just great. I am so upset......... The tooth looks like this the doctor explained. The tooth should look like a box. His tooth is a box with a step down on one side close to the gum line. She doesn't know how bad it is until we put him under and take a better look. ALSO, Every other tooth has points and some are too high. He needs attention to all of them I guess..... Just pray with me that the tooth that is fractured will grow up and not become an abcess. So upset. The first vet in centerville was trying to do what he thought was best but caused more harm than good. The reason his little teeth are such a mess is because of the abcess in the ear two years ago and he has paralyses on one side of his face. But you can't hardly tell. You have to look at him really close to see it. He has never once stopped eating.

The drooling is much much better...... : 0 )

I have him scheduled for Wed Oct 31st at 10:00am in Columbus (2 hours away(The much trusted expertvet))to have all of his teeth fixed up. I am terrified to have him put out. I couldn't bear to loose my baby. I wonder if I should not do anything at this time. He is still eating and acting fine. I took him to Bob Evans after the doctor visit and he was so cute. I sat him next to me on the chair on a baby blanket and he ate his salad while I ate. Everyone was going crazy over him and his little whale shirt. LOL

Please give me some advice on this.

Sugars worried mommy

I'm really glad you have a good vet looking after Sugar now. I know, having our rabbits put under is a little nerve racking. Sugars teeth sound pretty bad, so if you don't have them done now, it seems like they'll need to be done eventually. The sharp points can cause sores in the mouth, plus that cracked tooth you'll want looked at to make sure it's going to be ok.

Sugar sounds really cute!! You'll have to post a picture of him some time.
