OK I'm going to embarrass myself as I'm sure there are loads of fantastic sewers out there, but this is my first dress!

Its not finished yet. It is going to be lonegr (I cut it to short!) because I'm sewing a wide black band round the bottom, and it also has a big bow on the band that sits off centre. I was going to add lace trim around the neck but I think it might be too much..

I really like it!:D I reckon it looks ok as it is without the lace around the collar, and I like the idea of the black band around the bottom... I could never even sew a button onto something lol, so your dress is a work of art to me!

I wish I could wear dresses more. I HATE my legs so I only wear them with tights- I wore a dress to REM the other day but as it was the first time I'd worn one in yonks I spent the whole day pulling it down paranoid lol!

Grrrr... jealous of you! :p

Awesome job! I can't sew for peanuts, I think it looks good. And enjoy showing off your legs while you are still young and attractive, not like old me who is now for sure a pants person :p.

The black band around the bottom will be a good touch, I actually think it would have needed something like that anyway to balance out the black edging on the neckline and sleeves.

Keep up the great work :biggrin2:!

I guess I'm kinda lucky. I don't like the majority of my body but I don't mind my legs. They aren't that skinny (at all) but for some reason I quite like them and don't tend to worry about covering them up!

I'm getting a bit frustrated with it though. The satin I bought for the bottom band I can't seem to work out how to sew on, because its EXACTLY the same width as the bottom of the dress, so no space for hems, and even if I pin it without hems I still come up around 3 inches short, which makes no sense as when I lay it flat it is just right. I can't work out what I need to do, because the dress obviously widens out the more it goes down, so I need it a few inches wider to compensate... the only thing I can think of doing is getting some very wide lace trim (like 4 inches wide or something) and add another strip of the purple (that I cut too much off of in the first place) then covering it with the lace to hide the seam, and bias binding it again to hide the seam.... oh its so confusing[font="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"]

It does sound confusing, I'm having a hard time getting the bobbin into my machine let alone sewing anything on it :grumpy:. At least with sewing your own stuff, you can get creative, and all the little things that went wrong and you 'fixed', then become and a quirk of the outfit.

I have to say, a lot of that is *wooosh!* over my head, as I have NO idea over dressmaking.... In fact, I bought a bikini in the sale for my holiday- the top was £3, but it's too big for me. The strap round the back isn't adjustable, it's just a clip thing. It should be a straightforward job to unsew the join that threads through the clip, pull it tighter and re-sew it, but I'm terrified of mucking it up and having an 'accident' on holiday in the pool or the sea!! :scared::scared::scared:

Oh, and I still hate you... for having skinny legs (yes, I call them skinny!) and for not being paranoid about them! I reckon that if I even had skinny legs I'd still be really paranoid about showing them off lol :?

You look so cute in the dress Fran!! A border on the bottom would look nice, but you're young enough to pull off wearing it as is. What about sheer black lace border? I think that look very nice.

Awww it looks really good! You look pretty in it as well! :)

I WISH I could make a dress like that.... I'm going out tomorrow night debating having nothing to wear- if I could sew like you I would do lol! :X

Have a good night tomorrow night!! :dude:
