i'm thinking i'll ask for a cam for my b-day, and i'm really not sure what kind's the best. i'm looking for something not too big, small enough to fit in my purse, and under $125 or so. so, any suggestions?

thanks a bunch:biggrin2:!

I have a Kodak EasyShare. They are pretty nice! They are relativley small. I got mine at Wally world for 80 something bucks!!:biggrin2:

I really like Olympus cameras. Just don't buy the Mju (or something like that) me and 3 of my friends had it and they all broke in exactly the same way (lens would not open).

Also I was advised not to go for Fuji by a friend who works on the photo counter. Apparently their customer service is bad and the cameras aren't great quality.

I really like Cannon cameras because most of their little cameras have manual settings so that if you want to have more control over your picture you can mess with the settings - it's also just fun to toy around with :biggrin2:

I prefer cameras with manual controls, so I can shoot manaully on my own settings. But that is me. :)

Going to a Camera Show today! All the different camera companies will have a rep with their displays and new cameras at West Edmonton Mall. :D

i can't believe i didn't think of this before. e-mail my uncle! for pete's sake! he's a professional photographer......and i didn't even think of talking to him:shock::D! it was grandpa's idea:p. any way, he e-mailed him and told him the camera i think i want and i guess i'll kick him a e-mail too. i'll let y'all know what he says:biggrin2:. the one in the link below is my fave right now:cool:

did i already post this one? i really like it:biggrin2:

still working on finding prices:rollseyes

when was the last time i mentioned how much i love my uncle:D:p? he said the one i was looking at was a good camera, but he also suggested this one. other than the colors, i like it waaay better. it's got all the stuff the other one has and more, and the price is pretty much the same. it does have less MP(2 less), but he said "On the camera, one you might want to consider is the Canon PowerShot SD1100 IS Digital ELPH Digital Camera. It costs a little more than the Samsung, but I feel the quality of construction & the quality of your photos may be a little better. This is an 8 mega pixel as apposed to the Samsung's 10 mega pixel - but mega pixels is not always a true indicator of image quality. There are other factors that come into play like sensor manufacturer, type, on board processing technology, etc. Personally, I would choose a Canon 8 megapix over a 10 megapix of just about any other camera manufacturer (except Nikon). So, having said all that, I still think the Samsung's a good deal for the price, but if it were me, I would probably go with the Canon."

any way, i'm really happy i found something, and since Uncle told me about it i don't have to worry about the quality as much;)

any one else have it:cool:?

I have a Canon PowerShot A530. Its pretty cool because it handles me dropping it real well.

I think all the pics I've posted here are from that camera.

I had a different Canon Powershot before this one and LOVED it (even if this one has more features) but it drowned when I dropped it in the river.

Yeah I definately agree with your uncle! Canon is a very highly respected manufacturer, and even their smaller compacts are really great quality. I find them really easy to use, as well.

The thing with megapixels, is that it only really matters when you're blowing the pictures up massive- say if you were printing them REALLY big or something. 8MP is more than plenty for regular printing (maybe up to A3? I'm not entirely sure) and looking at on the computer! :D

Here are some reviews of that camera! :)

I don't know if this is true but as far as I know the human eye could only see 7mp anyway. Obviously a 10mp camera is going to produce very clear photographs, but the pixels don't matter a huge amount.

Also, remember that pixels are by far not the only factor when you want to buy a camera.

Good luck!

Just 4 months before I will get an SLR... I can't wait!

EDIT: Forgot to add, anything above 4mp would be fine. My camera is old and is 4mp (I use it to take all my pictures you can see on the site). I've blown up a photo to A2 and it is very clear.

If you look at my entry for the photophile contest, that was taken with my very very very old 3.2 camera.

I really like my camera, it's not perfect, but it records movies in high-def and I like some of the other features. No idea how expensive it would be in other countries though? It's a panasonic lumix TZ-5 and it was just under $600 here.

It's a 9.1 MP camera with a 10x optical zoom lense. I like the 3 inch LCD screen on the back too as I have bad eyesight.

OOOH Fran what camera are you getting?!!
Don't know yet, but I've got about £1000 to spend on camera and all equipment. Problem is my Grandad is a Canon person so I'll probably be getting a Canon! Hope to get a nice zoom lens, bag, tripod, flashgun etc to go with it too. Its my 18th present!

WOW! You should get a pretty good camera and set-up for that! I have the EOS 400D and although it's fairly low in their range it's still REALLY good...

As for a zoom lens- I have the 55-250mm IS (Canon) and it's brilliant!! It was about £200 I think, and I think the IS (Image Stabilisation) really makes a difference...

I can't believe how expensive tripods are though! I've just ordered a dirt cheap one, for like £20, and I'm expecting it to be pants, but I just can't justify spending too much on one right now. If you're looking for memory cards etc though, check out www.mymemory.co.uk it's really really cheap and free delivery :)

Oh is it good? My friend has the Nikon D40 and she loves it, that's also a low range one, I'm hoping that whilst they are buying I might as well get a low-mid range one with everything I can milk out of it. They spent £900 on my cousins round the world ticket, but they won't buy me something equal in price just because they have to. They'll buy me the one that is good and works but for somewhere around that price.

I cannot wait! And I looked at the tripods in Jessops and they are like £80 each! I don't know if I really need one, but if I can I might as well! Would be nice for group photos but I prefer being more hands on.

Yeah it's brilliant! The only thing I would want to change is perhaps Live View- which the 450D has. Although, if I had it I wouldn't use it often- just for taking low down or high up shots occasionally maybe. When I use my compact now it seems strange to hold it out at arm's length rather than have it up to my eye to take a picture lol! I've read some pretty good reviews on the 450D....

Here is a brilliant offer I've just randomly found:

I don't know if your budget would stretch, but the 40D is supposed to be really good! If you've got a couple of months to decide it might be worth doing a trial subscription to either Digital Photo or Practical Photography magazine. They're both totally independant and have really good beginner advice and reviews and stuff- that's where I started before I got mine! Both of those magazines do a 3 month subscription for £10 I think, or they're about £3-4 an issue...

As for tripods, if you're taking pictures in really good light you should be ok without one- it's where you start to use slower shutter speeds, leaving the camera more prone to shaking that you'll notice it. We're going to the Lake District in a week or 2 and I plan on getting up super early to take some shots of the lakes- so I'll definately need that tripod! :p

Oh, Ladybug, sorry I just totally hijacked your thread! :? :threadhijacked: Sorry!

I'd wait to get a tripod, until you really need one. Don't buy an inexpensive one, because you would only waste your money if you need a better one. Make sure the tripod will support your biggest and heaviest lens because you wouldn't want it totip over.
The really expensive ones are carbon fiber which are very light to carry. You don't need those unless you plan to carry them around with you for long distances. Another factor for the tripod is the mount head, which is another cost factor.

Canon or Nikon are very good cameras. You just have to decide which system you want to go with. You can't go wrong with them.
