I know this is a common issue with rabbits and one of my males who has a hutch by himself does this habitually.
For the last week or so my female, Lint (spayed last Xmas) started digging out hthe litter box that she shares with Asha (also spayed) I have no explanation where this new behaviour comes from and makes cleaning so much harder. She never used to do that before. Both have perfect toilet habits but now the soiled litter gets distributed all over the clean stuff and it's quite a nuisance.
Nothing has changed in her habits or her environment otherwise. Could this changed behaviour be a sign of something else going on?

find a box, cut 2 entrances on opposite sides, stick some paper through a shredder (enough to fill half the box) and let him at it =)

hopefully he will choose to dig there instead of his litter box, if he doesn't go in at first then throw some oatmeal in and he will go nuts at it =)

I put a handful of oatmeal in the box i made for my girls every night and they spend hours digging around for it

hope that helps

Our kids started doing the same thing abut 2 years ago...and since they live side by side...each did a monkey-see monkey-do and all 4 started to do the same thng! Quite the M-E-S-S!

We made a litter grid out of light grating to go over top...keeps bunnies feet clean and makes it impossible to dig! ;)

You can see the grating in Storms litterbox!

I find it impossible to get hold of those grids here in Ireland. Another digging box in the hutch really isn't an option due to space restrictions. I just wonder what sparked off the new behaviour?

hormones, female rabbits naturally feel the need to dig every so often as they are the ones who generally build the nest (i think)... Now I'm no expert in this matter but from I've read from trolling these forums, it can also be a false pregnancy where the rabbit thinks she's pregnant and builds a home etc.
If this isn't the case then it's probably just hormones, as I mentioned it's natural for females to feel the need to dig..

She was spayed last Xmas and hasn't really displayed much hormonal behaviour since.
