Can a rabbit differentiate between a dig box and a litter box ? Do you leave the dig box out all the time or is it more of a treat?

Honey had no problem, but she was an adult & already litter box trained when I got her & introduced the dig box.
And if you start off with the dig box containing paper, then transition, if you want, to heavier material, it will be even clearer.

We use hand shredded newspaper to make cleanup easier.

Just curious, how did you guys start with the dig box? Or did your bun just know what it was for?
I have a cardboard box with some soil and newspaper in it. But Buster just likes to go in and sit in it... must be nice and soft for him! But then he still digs up his litter box :confused2:

What litter are you using? Maybe trying another type might cut down the digging. If so, save the kind he likes to dig in, wait a few weeks, & put a little into the dig box. Hopefully he'll dig in it & not use it as a litter box.
