Culture Help- Please

Hey Guys, I recently took Pablo to his vet. He has been battling a case of the snuffles for some time now. They had him on Probiocin and Baytril for a month or so. I noticed it was still not getting better. I finally sent out a nasal culture and the results came back. Can someone please help me decipher them? The vet did not really explain what anything was which I am kind of annoyed about. My sweet boy still has the icky snuffles, he has some sort of white discharge coming from his nose. I did google some of the stuff they found and one of the organisms was Moraxella Osloenisis. All i got from a google search was that this is the cause of locker room smell.

Would someone be able to assist me with this

From a brief google search, it seems like that particular organism would be susceptible to penicillin treatment, but this is an uninformed opinion from a very cursory glance. The idea of a culture is to figure out what's actually there so you can target your treatment.

Did your vet recommend a treatment after this was conducted? I am slightly confused if what you're implying is this vet did not change medication nor recommend something after seeing these results.

I will mention, anecdotally, that it was Baytril + peniciliin-injection combo treatment which rid my rabbit of his upper respiratory infection. We did not do a culture, but did trial and error of medications.

I'm not a vet, and I would hope that the choice to use doxycycline was somehow informed through the culture results you got. I see what appears to be sensitivity/resistance results for each of the organisms at the bottom of the results (?) maybe? Is this vet rabbit-experienced? If so, I would potentially give the medication a chance that you have and, unless things increase in severity, see if there is symptom relief. It is not uncommon for the first medication tried for a URI (upper respiratory infection) to be ineffective, since so many different types of bacteria can cause it. For my rabbit, we tried a different medication first.

I would definitely call the vet and ask any and all questions you have. That is their job and as animal caregivers, they should WANT to give you all the information you need. Their response to your call should tell you whether you might need to find another vet that will happily ensure you have everything you need to take care of your baby. My vet literally called me on his cell phone one night to see how my Fur’o was responding to being taken off his pain meds after his neuter. (I found a fabulous vet!)
