Hi,
on my other posting i posted regarding my bunny anyway he has fur mites- these can only be seen under a microscope. He is having treatment forthem via injection.
When i was combing him i noticed little black flecks on his fur on closer inspection they are moving!!!
They are not fleas so any ideas as to what they are ?????
Also where is he picking all this up from, i do have a fox that wandersthe garden also squirrels that vist but i am totally mortified , i havenever had a bunny that has suffered from any of this before!
He is at the vets tomorrow for his second injection for fur mitestomorrow , but the vet did say these mites could only be seen under amicroscope.
I know they are not fleas .Any ideas. They are very small.

They could be any varietyof lice by hte sounds, if they areblack and all , If you have Fox andSquirll running in thegarden this is where they could becoming from , Do you perchancehave chickens? , I would tryto keep him out of the garden for awhile and dust it with somesort of Lice removal preperation , I justhope if it isa lice it can beswiftly cured.

Hi,

had a google about , definatly sound like lice EWWWW.

I think they are treatable with the same stuff as fur mites , im at thevets tomorrow for his second jab for fur mites so i will ask the vet ,im just worried about the source.

I have a large fox round regular and a couple of squirrels.

When ive been on google there is something called STRONGHOLD forbunnies with reoccuring probs have you heard of it? I hav edisinfectedhis hutch he's cleaned out everday etc.I have never had a bunny withthis fur prob before. This is a new home and new garden etc , we neverhad squirrels in our other home , nor fox thats why im thinking it maybe them?? We dont have chickens , im not a bird fan.

My bunnies had lice, I used flea powder on myrabbits. It solved the problem for1 or2 months, then they started appearing every few weeks or so in small numbers. Icontrol them with herbal flea shampoo when I see them pop up in mybunnies fur. Strangelya fewkeep reappearing everyfew weeks, I guess they come from the garden.

I fear , short of exterminatingthe Fox this is going to be arecurring problem , the little nasties can live forever insoil and not hatch until there is a suitable host .For now once you get the lice cleared up I wouldntlet him anywhere near the garden . and If you have to go intothe garden for anything I would wash offthe shoes and possibly vaccume off your pants, and legs , they dont care which carrier theyuse and you can bring them inside on yourclothes , chances are they will not live off youbut will go straight for the rabbit.
I cant lie to you and say getting rid ofthem is going to be easy , especially in the garden, you may have to resort to harshpesticides and not be able to let therabbit back in the garden , I wish I had aquick fix , but I dont .

hi,

been to the vets he took a sample he said it was the mites that are theblack flecks , they are pinhead size.He gave my bunny a secondinjection and said go back for another in 10 days.Apparently it is veryvery common in all bunnies.I have obvioulsy spotted it as i have awhite bunny!

He told me not to panic !
