I recently bought some of this corn based litter to try for Gizzy, I was leary about it because i worry he might eat it, well he has been eating it and i am now regretting getting this kind. Not sure if i should ever buy this stuff again, does anyone use corn based litters??

From what I have read, corn litter is never a good choice for rabbits. They can't digest corn and any bit they eat can become dangerously impacted. I would take it away from him and buy something else, like Yesterday's News or wood stove pellets.

I believe the corn litter is actually made out of the cob. I'm not sure if rabbits can digest the cob or not. (There's some debate over whether or not rabbits can digest the kernels and therefore risk impactions, with many rabbit owners choosing to err on the side of caution and not feed their rabbits corn.) My concern would be withyour rabbit filling up on the litter (empty calories) and not eating the more nutritious hay and pellets.

I'd switch to Yesterday's News or wood stove pellets/horse stall bedding (which rabbits don't tend to eat), just to be safe.

Hope that helps!

Thanks guys, that makes my decision much easier, I did have him on something similar to yesterday's news ( recycled paper) but it was getting expensive only because i was changing it daily. I will be going back to that, I dont like him eating that stuff.

You should try wood stove pellets (also known as pelleted pine horse stall bedding). It's only about $5 for 40lbs and it's great! It works just as well as YNs I think.

I have heard of people getting them in Canada. Hardware stores might be the best place to look.

The corn cob litter isn't digestible by bunnies which is why we don't recommend it for bunnies.

Rona, Home Depot, Home Hardware, pretty much any hardware or building centre will carry them. However, I'm not sure if they'll still have them in stock, as they are a winter item. If you can't find them there, go to a tack and feed shop and buy horse stall bedding. It should be around the same price: $5-6 for a 40 lb. bag.

Hope that helps!

My local farm store still had wood stove pellets just last week, and you're further north than me so they probably have them! If they're out, you can go to a farm store and ask for pelleted pine horse stall bedding. It's the same thing, but sold for horses, and they would carry that year round.

The wood pellets are often hardwood, or made from pine that has been kiln dried. If they are not kiln dried pine, the aromatic oils are dangerous to bunnies. I know the ones I use are hardwood. Softwoods are the ones that have the oils.
