My husband and I took in what we were told is a 6 month old lop eared (I think she's a holland lop eared) female called Daisy after a lady advertised for a new home for her as she could no longer care for her due to ill health. I've always wanted a house rabbit and also 2 of my 4 children were also asking for one so we thought it was a great idea to take her in as she needed a home (and we believe in rehousing an animal before going to a pet store if possible - we also took in a 6 month old hamster 7 months ago as he too needed a new home :) ) when my hubby went to pick her up the lady said she was six month old but was her daughter's before she took her. She said she'd had her a good few months before having to re home and wanted £45 for her. But we've just found out the lady and her daughter have only had her for a month before we took her in. Now I'm slightly worried as to how old she is as i was told that because she is is 'apparently' 6 months - timothy hay is fine. However if younger the alfafa (sorry if i spelled it wrong) is better. The lady was feeding her dog biscuits. Also I read that you shouldn't spay a rabbit before six months - we are/were planning to book her in for the procedure over the next couple of weeks. Plus we recently found out she bought 3 new hamsters last week after telling us she needed rid of her animals due to ill health.

I'd stick with timothy hay-that's fine. We've given some of ours Alfalfa when they were little but then actually found that it was really difficult to transition them to Timothy as they liked the alfalfa better.

As for her age, do you have a picture of her? :) If you're worried she's not as old as they said, I'd rather ere on the conservative side a wait a little bit longer to get her fixed to be sure she does fine with the surgery. Also, ask the vet what they think, and if they think she's old enough/ready, then go for it.

The vet could probably give you a pretty good guesstimate as to her age. If you're guessing she's around the 6 month mark, it's fine to keep her on Timothy hay. My vet gave me the okay to switch Tippy at 4 months, and I know some people whose bunnies never even started on alfalfa.
