When we purchased our first two bunnies Jack and Yusei, we were told that they were mini rex rabbits. That was three months ago. I have since purchased several other mini rex rabbits and although they all have similar body/ears shape and size I have noticed that the boys no longer have that same fur. Their hair has gone to more of a long and smoother texture. Can this happen to mini rexes or were they mixed with something we weren't told about???????? (The breeder we got them from we have since purchased four other rabbits from and have had no issues)

Yusei Jack

They definitely look like they are mixed with something. ;) Their ears are much to big to be purebred Mini Rex, and their fur doesn't look like Rex fur at all. I would assume you were lied to about them being Mini Rex, and I wouldn't buy from that breeder anymore.

The others are probably mixes as well, but just look more similar to Mini Rex.

Defently not Mini Rex. I was looking at this photo the other day thinking 'huh?'
The black one looks more like a flemish giant. The white one looks like a Lop X ?

I think I may have it pegged. I was looking around at other breeders websites, trying to locate a mini rex buck , when I found a site selling mini rex/lionhead mix kits. They looked just like Yusei and Jack. I went and pulled the bunnies out as well as one of my lionheads and the fur is the same! I never made the connection before becuase of the mane on my LH's. Then when I thought about it, the breeder I purchased them from also has lionheads. It is entirely possible that they are mixed between the two. Looks like the are being moved to the pets only category. Oh well we still love em.

I am confused - the breeder didn't tell you they could be mixed?

I'm not sure I'd want to deal with that breeder again...

If they're a Mini Rex/Lionhead cross, the ears certainly shouldn't be that long. I'd guess that the breeder either has mixed breed stock herself that she's breeding, or she is working with very poor examples of the breed. Lionheads are to have short ears, more similar to a Netherlan Dwarf. And a Mini Rex's ears should be no higher than the peak on their back when they're posed up. So a mix between the two wouldn't theoretically have such large ears.

I'm guessing that they are mixed between mixes.:pBut will still make great pets, I'm sure!

:yeahthat: Lion-Heads ears are short just like you said..

Here is a Website that I have found and it shows how the ears are supposed to be ..

hope that helps! :)

Thanks for your help guys, and the website is awesome. The picture of jack (the black one) isn't the best picture it really does emphasise the ears. I went back and measured them and they are 3 inches. Not sure what that means but hey, since I am only going to use them as pets...... Hope everyone has a great day.
