Hi, what does it mean when Norton says I have a Trojan.Brisv.A!inf on my comouter.

We tried to "Fix" it by running some scan but it says a technical person needs to repair it.

I assume I must bring it to someone who can fix it.

Does anyone have a clue about this?

I think we got it when Chris was downloading music from Limewire.

Thanks

Susan:?

Hey Ali, thanks,we tried that, but it said that you should have some Tech person do it. And reading all the stuff made me even more confused

Both Chris and I are NOT very Technical.

Susan:)

Its a trojan, I assume. A programme that you download somehow, thinking its something else, so you let it on your computer, then it hides and does naughty stuff.

So its basically a virus, a virus which the Norton Antivirus didn't detect and doesn't know how to get rid of, you will need to go to a techie person who can get rid of it for your properly.

Ya I got a Trojan on my computer before too and it started to download all this weird illegal porn and started telling us we had 20,000 illegal porn pictures on our computer and the guards were going to come and get us lol :?

Just did a Yahoo search for it. Found this. It's a removal tool from Symantec.

Also has information on it.

You don't need to be a techie to use this tool, they are designed to make it easy for the average computer user. Just make sure you are an administrator on the computer. That means if you have differant profiles set up in xp for differant people you have to be logged in as theadministrator profile.

The easiest way to do this is to:

1.Log into "safe mode." While your computer is booting up, before you see the Windows splash screen press F8. (You may have to press it several times to make sure you hit it at the right moment)

2.When the menu comes up choose boot safe mode with networking. Windows will load with just the basic drivers needed.

3.Run the tool, rebootand it should take care of it for you!

I just cleaned out my neighbors laptop and she had over 80 trojans/virus' running, her computer took 15min justto boot.

Let me know ifI can be of any help!

Did you get your puter fixed, Susan? We had one once too, luckily we had a IT guy at work that fixed it for me. What Becknutt says is right. You may also need another program to be rid of it. He saved the programs on my puter and they're called HiJack this, regcleanand Stinger. You may be able to find them online at like Cnet.com.

I'm not sure about Norton, we have McAfee, which was suggested by the IT guy and it has worked very, very well and we've had it for almost 2 years now.

Good Luck, let us know what happens!;)

Unfortunately I got Becknutt's reply after we brought the computer in. We still don't have it back yet which annoys me as they said I'd have it back the same day. Mind you they guy only works part time. I'm just hoping all my documents don't end up in cyber space somewhere.

We do have some of the documents saved on disc but not all of them.

We did buy an external hard drive but I haven't set it up yet. Does anyone know how hard that is to do?

I'm using Chris' lap top at the moment but it's so darn slow. Their again we didn't know much about the brains of a computer when we bought it, it sounded like a good deal.:?

Susan:)

Yes, plug it in and power it on, that should be all there is to it. Windows should find it and load the drivers needed to make it work. It will then show up as another drive letter in My Computer.

I wish I had done that before we got this Virus. The tech phoned me this morning saying that he did everything Norton suggested to get rid of the virus but it was still on the computer. So I had to bring in the hard drive so he could save all my documents. The he had to reformat the computer. A few dollars later.

We got this virus from Limewire, the free version. Chris wanted to pay for it but my niece said oh no the free one works fine. Yeah right totally screwed up our computer.

The 'paid for' one doens't work either. The free one is illegal, the paid for one isn't but it still has the same amount of issues with viruses. Just buy stuff... iTunes or similar isn't too bad.

Its too bad you had to reformat. :(At least you were able to save your documents!

In all honesty the pay version of limewire has just as many virus issues. I use it but I scan EVERY file I d/l before I open it. You have to be very careful with limewire. You can actually use the free version to d/l the pro version.

Thanks for that info Pinksalamander and Becknutt. I'l definetely tell the huby that.

How do you scan each song/filebefore you download it? Don't forget I'm so not Technical when it comes to computers. Oh to be young again.

Also when this tech guys puts all the files andstuff back on the computer, such as Itunes, can it get reinfected from the itunes? I did ask him and he said no but I just want to be sure.

Another question, is their some kind of easy course out there that I can take to learn about the inner working of a computer, such as fixing virus, signing up on Outlook ect etc. Not really in depth though. (I hope you guys understand what I'm trying to say)

Chris (hubby) went to sign up on a Job sight but they said the following:

A Cookie is a very small text file placed on your hard drive by a Web Page server. Of course neither of us has a clue what to do. These are the types of things I need to learn.

Limewire - After you download the song, do not open the file until you have scanned it with your antivirus program. You should be able to right click on the file and choose "scan with "whatever the name of your antivirus is"

No, you shouldn't get reinfected by itunes. I'm sure the tech took care to check your files before restoring them.

As for a course, I would say check with your local community college. I took a few classes there. There should be a good intro class, as well as many more specialized classes.

Now the cookies. Do you use internet explorer? If so, then under the tools menu select "internet options." Then on the "privacy" tab, you should see a slider bar thatcontrols cookies. For example, mine is set to "medium." Under the slider bar you shouldseea buttonthat says "sites" Click on "sites", and enter the name of the website you were trying to access, andclick "allow."Click OK to save. Thenclose internet explorer and re-open. You should now be able to access the site. Just make sure you trust the site you are "allowing" because some sites will use cookies to steal your information or track you. ;)

Thanks Becknutt,

Well my problems get bigger. The "Tech" guy said he saved all my documents on the hard drive. When I hooked it up and started to search the externalhard driveNONE were there. Not to pleased at this point so I phoned the store who did the work of course Techy wasn't still there so some other dude asked me to bring in the external hard drive NOPE still not there.

So of course he's making excuses, now I'm waiting for Tech Guy to phone me. Not impressed. I had my life on the computer. And it was not cheap either.

My local NPR station has local programming in the mornings, and national programming in the afternoons. This morning, one of the local shows had their monthly visit from "the computer guys."

One of them mentioned that stuff on Limewire is getting more and more insidious. There have been instances of programs being downloaded through Limewire, and the virus is actually hidden inside the program installer, so it will launch when the installer is launched, and it's difficult to detect it's there before the installer does its thing, since it's bundled within the installer. This occurs with the free version and paid versions, equally.

Personally, I'd rather pay for stuff to get it legally than download things and have to deal with all the issues.
