So from what I've been reading, the way to tell if a black baby is black, chestnut agouti, or opal is when they actually get fur? Or can you tell before that, if you know what to look for?

I can only tell any kind of color once hair starts growing. I made an assumption with my last brit litter that I got all black otters and I was sooooo excited. Those babies turned out to be chestnut agouti once the fur came in. Let's just say I was thoroughly sad because I love otters lol.

When they are just born to tell the difference between black and the other two wouldn't you also look for agouti markings such as the pink belly?

I've also heard of people telling anything from an agouti because the ears would be whiter on the inside?

First, I need glasses. LOL What I saw as pink on the black self example was actually the bottom of the feet. LOL

No clue about the pink belly.... because the description for the opal, chin, and the agouti are all with pink skin on the belly.

Adeline has 6 babies right now that I'm not sure the color on. When they were born, they looked opal. But now a few of them have more gold tipping on the ends than the others. So that got me to wondering if I had 6 opals, or 4 opals and 2 agoutis.

And I'm still not sure about that smokie baby. The only white it has, at all, is a tiny bit at each nostril. The rest of the body is either the dark blue or the really light lilac color. The entire belly is lilac, with blue undercolor. Inside the ears is lilac. And there is not a trace of a triangle on the neck. It looks nothing like my lilac pearl. And it looks nothing like my blue or lilac chin.

Adeline's killing me with all these colors! lol

LOL!!!

I meant between the chestnut, opal and the black. The two agoutis would have pink bellies. Telling apart chin and chestnut I would think you would have to wait until fur came in but once it did it would be VERY easy to tell the difference.

Pictures would be lovely to see if you have them :D

OMG! Don't even ask for pictures. LOL I've tried taking pictures of that smokie doe for days...and nothing shows her true colors. I can just imagine the fun with the opal/agouti questionable ones. LOL Can an agouti have a bluish base coat? Or is it always black??

Here are 3 shots of them, all lined up. Can you tell anything form these??

I believe Opal and Squirrel or Blue chin would have a blue base

I see some opals and maybe a chestnut (right kit) The lighting is throwing me off. Maybe someone else can see something else. I love your babies :) I can't even imagine Franklin being that little LOL

THANKS!!!

Now that they've got another few days of growing done, I think there are 6 opals and one smokie something. I'm still not seeing chin on the smokie. All the lighter hair is still lilac, no white anywhere. It sure would be easier if they were classified as black, white, chocolate, other. LOL

LOL well i didnt know if you were including lilacs because the are supposed to make a showing in kansas :)
