Can a rabbit wear a collar around theirneck? In a week I will be moving out of our apartment andinto a trailer :D This will be before I get my newbunny, but I was wondering if I should have him or her wear acollar with a name tag and phone number once I get him. Thereason I ask is because, he or she will be a house rabbit andeventually have run of the whole house except at night and since we aregoing to be in a trailer, if he gets out the door, he's outside, notjust in a hallway like here. So I was wondering if I shouldget him a collar. I got one with tags for both my cats forthe same reason.

The bunny I'm getting is a flemish giant so I'm not expecting him to beconstantly running around the house and darting out the door but Iwould still like to take precautions. There are alot ofplaces for a bunny to hide outside. So, do you think it wouldbe ok if I got him or her a collar?

Thanks

-Madelon

I cant wait to move, I've never had a yard before.

A collar can provide a dangerous trap for therabbit. They can get a foot caught in it, or catch theirbottom jaw on it while trying to chew it off. Having seenthis happen, I highly advise against collars unless under constantsupervision while wearing it.

Consider having the rabbit micro chipped for identification.

I've heard that most people will "tattoo" theirphone number onto the rabbit's ear with a magic marker (that way, it'snot permanent). There's no guarantee someone will think to have yourrabbit checked for a chip, so I think this is the most fool-proofmethod.

Marker doesn't stay in the ear verywell. We often mark the coop numbers in the ears at largershows and often have to remark them during the week, as the permanentmarker comes off easily. You can have your phone numbertattooed into the rabbit's ear -- but it would be a problem if youmoved again :(

Alright, no collar then. Thanks fortelling me. I have considered getting the cats microchippedbut not enough people check for it. Most shelters dont evencheck because they dont have the little swipe thingy.

I guess I'll just watch carefully when I open the door. Idoubt he'll try to escape but I wasn't sure if I should use a collarjustto be safe. I wont though.

Writting in the ear is an idea I suppose but I doubt anyone wouldactually call the number if they found the rabbit. Mostpeople would just assume it's a wild rabbit and that some kids weremessing around. (That's what I would think)

Any other tips would be greatly appreciated

i like the idea of having the number in thebunnys ear but can you imagine moving and having to keep getting newnumbers. I can just see a bunny with lots of numbers in itsears. At least thats how my cat of 13 years, she would havequite a few past numbers :)good luck with your new bunny

Due to risk of injury, it is not recommended that pet rabbits be fitted with rings:

"It is recommendedthat any animal sold as a pet has it's leg ring removed as they canbecome embedded in the animals leg if it becomes overweight, andforeign bodies can also become trapped behind them causing trauma tothe rabbits leg."
