Cleaning Scent Glands

In the last few weeks, Gus's poops have been becoming stinkier and stinkier. And the last couple of days that aroma has even been lingering on him. (Particularly his back end! ) I've never cleaned his scent glands before,so I'm guessing that's what needs doing.

What's the best way to do it? I know about the Q-Tip and warm water, but he's not the type of bun that enjoys being held--and heaven forbid you try to get even a look at his underside!

Any suggestions???

Mine don't get a choice. They get held, flipped and cleaned with baby wipes--the unscented ones. A couple of our Rabbits get stinky when we give them vegetables, so, those two now get a reduced amount--they smell better and there is less cleaning involved.

Look in the little pits on either side of the penis... spread the skin there gently... (This is a lot easier with an extra pair of hands, btw..) You will see dark gooey slits (size of a sunflower seed).

I use mineral oil with q-tip, with toilet paper on the side. They can get quite sticky and resistant to movement... all the more reason to do it more often (I don't want to pull their sensitive skin too much )

I still haven't managed to clean Gus's scent glands. But not long after I posted this, he stopped smelling. I'm not sure if he cleaned himself, or if it had to do with him not needing to mark his territory so often (having moved from the bathroom floor into his own NIC cage).

I'd still like to try cleaning them, but he just won't tolerate anybody poking around his nether-regions...

And now his nails are getting long and need to be clipped. Oh fun! :rollseyes
