When a chinchilla color is young, is it common to have some white where you wouldn't expect it? Like a blotch on top of their back foot? Do their colors change at all? Or is it a "what you see is what you get" thing?

Cuddling with Max this evening, I noticed that he had a big white splotch on his back foot. Didn't notice it before, but it's obvious when he stretches out for a nap. Especially when his feet are practically in my face. LOL

I wouldn't worry about it at this point because its in the area of the tan pattern line. It may molt out more evenly. Generally white spots that don't disappear occur more commonly on the face and front toes.

Let us know what happens with it - do you happen to have a photo?

Thanks, Pam. I tried taking a photo, but it's harder than it would appear to be. LOL

Here's one, with the flash:

And here's without the flash:

Larry, so you think it'll be okay? I didn't notice him when we picked him up at the breeder's. Heck, I just noticed it last night and I've had him since the 10th. lol

Pam, not sure if this will work or not:

Or maybe even this: http://rabbitsonline.net/gallery_view.php although I think that'll take you to your pictures and not mine. If so, they're in my pictures, under West Wind's Rabbitry.

I just don't want to look like an idiot if I take him to a show and find out he's got a very visible DQ. :)

It's hard to tell from the photos, but to me it just looks like a normal tan pattern line along the back leg that normally extends down between the toes. Can you take a photo with both rear legs extended so we can more clearly see and compare? What color is the fur under the white spot? (Is it white clear to the skin or dark underneath?)

I'll take better pictures later, when my daughter gets home from school. Not sure it would be possible to hold him upside down and take a pic. lol It looks like the skin underneath is dark.

I wouldn't be worried if the base is slate blue - the marking sounds normal. It'll probably clean up after a molt.
