Okay, I planted carrots this year... mostly for my rabbits.. but unfortunatly they arent doing so well... the carrots that is! Well, I decided to pick some anyways for them, since they always get store bought. Anyways, do you feed them the greens as well? I gave my rabbits the full thing today and they LOVED it! Trying to decide if I should try to plant some carrots indoors for my rabbits to have during the winter months too.

I guess I should have worded that better... I give my rabbits carrots and veggies year round.. but thinking of planting carrots so they can have very fresh carrots/greens year round.

Oh no, I dont give them very much. Just a few of my garden carrots each (My garden carrots are about the size of the nail on my ring finger) so not big at all. They are like bite size to my rabbits haha.

I know we think of carrots when we think of rabbits [Bugs Bunny etc], but they're not the best food for rabbits by any means. They have too much sugar to be more than occasional treat & the greens have 10 times the calcium of any other veggie, so that isn't very good either.

What you CAN grow in a window box is wheat grass. Just get some wheat berries. If you can't find a 1-2 lb bag locally, you can get one from amazon etc. Anyway, just prepare a small windowbox with soil, sprinkle on some wheat [fairly thickly, about like grass seed], just barely cover with soil, press down to firm the soil, water very gently. In about 4 days you'll see shoots. When they're about 4", cut off 3 & give to the rabbits. You can cut for several weeks; then you'll have to plant again.

:yeahthat:

Herbs are easy to grow also and healthy. I have basil and mint and oregano growing. The romaine didn't grow well for me. The basil went crazy. There are many herbs that rabbits can have more regularly and in greater quantities than carrots. :goodluck

I bought today organic carrots with laaaarge tops but they ignored it(((
They used to like chopped carrots but not anymore. They doe is nursing, the buck got neutered. I wonder if this could change their preference.

I ve got very picky rabbits and this is driving me crazy!(
They can eat kale all day long. They also eat broccoli but not so well. Romane lettuce is OK for them but not too enthusiastic (along with red and green leaf lettuce). They are ignoring a lot of things they are supposed to like -- apples, cucumbers, tomatos, beet and carrot tops, squash, etc.
They are ignoring Sherwood forest food I just got for them which is supposed to be great! They are ignoring hay most of the time. They like grass in the yard.
Any advise for this picky eaters? They really drive me crazy!:(

Have you tried banana?? It is something that you have to be careful giving them.. Cant have very much at all.. but they LOVE it.. Mine do anyways. Mine get a tsp. of mashed banana once every week-2 weeks. OH One thing to not try is Mango!! Not good for bunnnies! Well, Ihad a bad experience anyways. I gave my one rabbit Sophie (she was a rescue) a very small piece of Mango, later that evening she passed away! :( She was healthy other wise. Poor girl!

My rabbits are not picky at all!! They eat basically anything. I just always really research what I give mine before feeding it to them. I was new to having rabbits and I read on ONE web page that Mango was okay for them.. she was the only rabbit who ate it..

Other than that, I have no clue.

yes, I tried banana - they didn't even touch it (they smell, then make a decision not to try)
When Snowball wasn't eating after being neutered, doctor recommended to give him toddler jar food by syringe. I gave him carrot puree and he was smacking like he liked it (well, he was eating carrots before). I wonder if I should "inject" some apple sauce so he would try.
They DO eat some dehydrated things in the rabbit food like dry bananas etc, but not fresh fruit.

WHAT IS A CONCERN is that bunnies seem to inherit this picky taste. HOW TO CONVINCE mama-rabbit and her bunnies to eat Sherwood forest for growers?

I've found that mine will eat what is available. When we got Peter all he would eat is pellets. We cut down the amount and mixed hay in with eat. After 2 days he'd empty his manger and is one of our more prolific hay munchers now.

Mangoes are part of the poison ivy family, I don't think buns are supposed to have poison ivy or any of its relatives. Maybe that is what happened to your bun, bhoffman.

The only reason I know that is because I'm highly allergic to mangoes, the oil on the skin of the mango is close to the same as the oil on the poison ivy plant. As my allergy to mangoes became more severe so did my allergy to poison ivy. It was a bad day when I ate a mango and rolled around in poison ivy! Yes, that actually happened.

My rabbits LOVE fresh green beans. I used to make salads for my bunnies. (I forget what was in them now).

I just looked up safe foods for rabbits and mango's ARE safe for them according to the house rabbit society.

Is a lot of kale OK for them? I don't mean really a lot, they just prefer kale to anything else.
