After moving into our new apartment and then lately one of our dogs have been sick we need to clean our carpet. What is the best way? I think some stains were here before we moved here. I know I can rent a carpet shampooer but what about steam cleaning? Or is that the same thing? I've never done this and do not know anything about it.

when the cats throw up we put baking soda on the carpet for a while(until it's absorbed everything)and then vacuum it up. i donno about the other stains:p

Yep, cover the stain lightly in baking soda, put a bit of vinegar on it (mix it with lemon juice if you are like me and dont like the smell of vinegar :p ) and it will fizz up, then when it dies down you can wipe/mop up the vinegar, maybe pbut a little bit more baking soda on it let it dry then you can hover it up.

wanted to add that the carpet shampooers you can rent are usually steam cleaners too. bissel also has a small personal use one that isn't terribly expensive--less than $70, i'd say... but i'm definitely not an expert!

You can rent ones from like the grocery store, ours here have them. Or call a company from out of the phonebook, they can cost around $100 though. Did the place you rent your apartment from have them cleaned before you moved in? They should have. If they didn't, I'd make them pay for it. There are also solutions you can buy to put on the stains before doing the actual cleaning.

(We just did ours, we are lucky enough to get one from where my hubby works, it's an industrial cleaner, pretty cool.)

We had one of those smaller ones, the trouble is that when you clean a spot, suddenly the rest of the carpet looks really dirty, so you really do have to do the whole room.

We have a larger machine we got at costco that works well.

haha, I hadn't thought of that, Missyscove! You're right. And those full size ones are prob at least $250.:?
