I have not built a rabbit cage yet but one thing I was thinking of was using cardboard to line the bottom of the cage so that I could clean out the cage completely every few days. However i was also thinking that the rabbit would eat the cardboard and that would cause bad digestive problems.

My personal experience with cardboard is positive.I give my rabbits paper towel rolls which they sometimes eat. I give them huge cardboard boxes which they rip and dig in but do not eat.

If you put cardboard on the floor your rabbit would most likely have a good time ripping and digging.
Excessive amount of cardboard ingested could cause a problem but it is worth a try to see how your rabbit responds to it..
Sounds like a good idea to me

I would not use cardboard for that purpose. Unless the rabbit has exceptional litter habits from day 1, it will get dirty and wet fast. You would need to replace it every time you clean.
Newspaper would work better to be able to gather up the stuff on the bottom easily. You would still need to clean to bottom of the cage as urine will soak through.
The best thing would be to litter train the rabbit. Then you only need to clean the litter box (and spot clean the cage as needed) instead of the whole cage every few days.
I have a dust pan that I sweep up poops and hay that don't make it into the litter box. It could be used to clean up other stuff too. A dog food scoop is also good for scooping up shavings and such.

Cardboard can be good as a toy, but it won't be good for cleaning.

I think that he meant that he would replace the piece of cardboard every few days

When I first got my bunny, someone here recommended I use fleece and that was a great idea. I was using newspapers but I found Sox being white was ending up with black feet! :( Easy to clean too. Like Korr & Sophie, I use a dustpan to clean up little bits of mess and once a week I would take the fleece outside and give it a good shake and an occasional wash too.

Sox has a heap of boxes as toys to play with and sheenjoys nibbling on the edgesof theboxes. I have never been concerned, should I be? :? I really don't wish to be an overprotective parent :grumpy:. Its good fibre isn't it,I though?:biggrin2:

HTHs

I'd think that cardboard would soak up pee too slowly to prevent pee pee butt and pee pee feet.
