I was brushing Daisy Mae this evening and noticed that her mane (sp?)had black in it now. Is this possible thatwhite fur turns black? She's 2 1/2 years old. She does have the black spot on her back and around her eyes.

Thanks

Susan:?

not sure if this is where I should have posted this question.

You know, Our australian shepherd has always been black and white.... but last year we noticed a small brown/tan spot on her mouth. It's gotten larger and she's actually - technically now a tri-color LOL!

My horse, Kota, gets a white crescent on his forehead and a white streak (snip) on his nose in the winter..... both are gone in the summer - just a couple of white hairs where the crescent was.

So I definitely would think a bunny could change her spots so to speak!

This is a winter photo of Dakota:

I've seen dark spots appear on white/light rabbits as they mature. Also have seen white spots appear on black rabbits as they mature. (Sometimes due to small injuries. Little nips during play/bonding/breeding can result in white hairs coming in on a dark colored rabbit too.)

Horses get white spots from little scars too.

I know I compare horses but I think most animals are similar in these things and I just use what I got :D

This is interesting, I was going to ask the same question.

My himalyan Rex has been outside for the last few weeks and the point on his nose has got wider and he's getting dark patches above his eyes, they look like eyebrows! Is it him maturing and getting darker (I think he's about a year old) or because of the change in temperature? I don't really want my himi boy to have eyebrows, although it is cute I must admit. :p

I took a seal point siamese kitten to my parents 12 years ago. He had come in to the humane society I worked at after the peoples dogs had killed the rest of the litter.

That kitten had a bad puncture wound on it's side but my Mom had wanted a siamese so I took him to her as he was.

Max recovered and is a beautiful cat (who HATES me) but he has an absolutely perfect snow white spot on his side where it healed.

..

On a rabbit note, I was told that Hotots are "black" rabbits and if one were to be injured somewhere the fur would grow in black. I have no idea how accurate that is though.

Yep - it's true that black banded Hotots have a black fur genotype (with a spotted coat pattern mutation). The mutation in the migration of the pigment cells results in a white coat.

However, injured areas don't always grow back in black fur.
