After a vet visit, I switched Peaches over to Oxbow Basic T (Timothy pellets) from his Nutriphase alfalfa pellets. Peaches got weaned off his Nutriphase and always left the Oxbow pellets in his bowl (he'd eat them if he was really hungry but he always ate them last).

Now he's happy eating his Oxbow pellets but can I still give him the alfalfa pellets as treats or will he go off his oxbow again? I'm saving the little orange bits for him as treats - there's not many but I figure as treats they can't be all that bad

Will it spoil his appetite for Oxbow if I give the alfalfa pellets as treats - let's say for training purposes?

It depends on how often, how much and how you give them. If you give it every day in his food bowl, then he could decide to hold out for more and not eat the Oxbow. If you hand feed them a couple times a week, he should be OK and still eat the Oxbow.

it doesn't hurt to try. my bun's favorite treat is his normal every day pellets. he doesn't like much else but as soon as the pellet bag rattles he binkies like crazy. so he gets his regular breakfast and dinner pellets (and access to hay for the whole day) and i have a baggy of pellets on me to let him pick out of my hand throughout the day when he's being good (not chewing up the carpet or going where he shouldn't be). just if your worried about his wanting to go back, give very sparingly.

I still have about 3-4 pounds from a 10 pound bag left over - I thought I'd give it out for good behaviour and for special occasions.

well-lets-disect this a bit.//.is peaches obese,,greatly overweight.??--if so -ok,.oxbow w-(timothy)---this is the(rabbit)- jenny craig diet plan.//.i suggest obtaining a electronic digital scale-and weighing the rabbit daily--don,t invite danger if she is the correct weight.//-increasing the grass intake uses up fat--,i use this for a couple fatty,s i have--they still get the required vitamins and minerals in the timothy pellet,,.however a rabbit whose weight is not a concern--average weight--i would keep on the purina rabbit chow--amount varies according to overall weight--say,quarter to half a cup max-daily.//.lots of accessible water,,and greens, weeds from the safe list http://www.medirabbit.com ---also plum, apple, pear, tree branches and twigs are great for those constantly growing teeth and gi-tract,--i hope this helps,..sincerely james waller:big wink:

Actually Peaches isn't overweight at all - he was weaned off the Nitriphase pellets cuz they're alfalfa based pellets and I didn't want him to get urinary tract infections (he likes his Oxbow now) He's actually a very thin bunny - he's about the thickness of a polish sausage with legs (maybe a tiny bit fatter) but he isn't obese at all. He likes his alfalfa pellets but doesn't really like the alfalfa hay. I just don't want to him to get hooked on his alfalfa pellets again
