I have had two bearded dragons and my daughter had a leopard gecko. I mostly took care of the gecko as well. Your friend can look at kingsnake.com
Before I got any lizard I read a lot there. Most pets stores tell you all of the wrong things for taking care of lizards.
Bearded dragons can come in many different colors if you buy through a breeder. That is how I got my first one. The 2nd I saw at a pet store and way to young to be there, took pity and just had to get him. Bearded dragon breeders are like most animal breeders if you find a good one. They won't ship animals too young as the stress can cause them to stop eating, etc.
My daughter thought the beardies looked scary but she wound up like them more than the gecko. You can let beardies out to roam (like buns) with less chance of it turning Houdini on you. Both need specific set ups as far as heat and geckos need humidity in one spot. Beardies should have at least a 75 gal tank if not larger depending on how large it does get.
Both ate insects, the beardie also got veggies after a certain age and both got calcium supplements.
