Well, everything was going well. Then, for whatever reason, we noticed Twila trying to breed her babies! She was grabbing them by the neck, and then trying to breed them (the same thing she did with the buck, when she got bred). The babies won't even be 5 weeks old until tomorrow. I have them separated, for now...should I go ahead and keep them separated?

Twila's definitely a good breeder, I'll give her that. LOL

Are they eating pellets and hay? I would think that since she's trying to breed them, she's not nursing them. I would go ahead and keep them separate. Maybe that's her way of telling you she'd done with this lot and it's time to be rebred?

I'd truly be afraid she would unintentionally hurt the babes. So I would keep them separate

K:)

Yes, they've been eating pellets, hay, and oatmeal. They're separated now, and will remain that way. I just hope their digestive tract is fully developed...I do NOT want to go through any more mucoid enteritis episodes.

I'm going to move Adeline to a new cage on Wednesday. Her babies will be old enough, and they've been eating/drinking on their own for quite a while. Although it's cute, watching them cuddling up with her for naps. :)

I remember one of my cal babies went through that. . .Very sad time to just watch him waste away so quickly. I think I read that at 6weeks they should be out of the critical point for getting enteritis.

Good Luck!

Our Satin doe did that. We still kept her with them till six weeks. I don't like to remove them any sooner. We would just take her out for a while then put her back in. she would usually stop for at least a few days.

I tried removing her, then putting her back, but she wouldn't stop. I'm not sure why she even started. I hate that I had to remove them, but I didn't want to go down and find one dead. :(
