Can a male Cali have what looks like a small dewlap? When I adopted my boy, I was told that, well, he's male and was recently neutered. The vet inspected his incision site and didn't mention that he appeared to be female....Plus, he scent-marks a lot (i.e., his fecals have that uber-musky smell to themmuch of the time).

Recently, I've noticed that he's developed a small-looking dewlap beneath his chin. He weighs about 8.5 lbs. and eats 1/4 C. of timothy-based pellets daily (along with hay and greens); I'm fairly certain that he's not being overfed calories, and he doesn't look/feel overweight anywhere else on his body. So what gives?

:?

Thanks,

Jenk

For showing reasons, it (the standard)doesn't say anything about Cali's being DQ'd or faulted for having dewlaps.
If not for showing reasons, of course bunnies can develop dewlaps.
How old is he?
Minimum junior weight for bucks is: 4 1/2 pounds; not over 9 lbs.
Intermediate weight for bucks is: not over 10 lbs.
Seniors weight: 9 to 11 lbs.

Is he getting exercise?

He surely doesn't sound overweight to me, if he's only 8.5lbs.

I don't really know what could be causing it....

Males, after being nuetered, will SOMETIMES get a small double chin. Also, like OakRidge said, it can be genetic.

As far as showing goes, bucks shouldn't have dewlaps. It's a general DQ that applies to all breeds, what it says in the standard about dewlaps is generally aimed at does. Since he's a pet, it shouldn't matter either way.

Mystery solved! :)

Thank you for the explanation, guys. I'm not showing him, so I'm not concerned. But it just messed with my head a bit.

Just want to share a truly awful joke that my husband made last night with regards to Pinkerton's small double-chin....

I told him RO members' explanation that some male rabbits can develop a small dewlap post-neuter. And Dear Hubby asked: "Wouldn't that make it a dudelap?" I gave him the most exaspirated look to date.

Dewlaps are DQ'd in only some breeds (applies to both bucks and does). The Florida White standard is a little unusual because it calls for a fault for dewlaps on bucks (but allows small dewlaps on does).

Cals neither fault nor DQ dewlaps.

Ah, it matters not to me. He's family, not a show bun. :) That said, his mini dewlap (or dudelap) only means that there's a little extra of him to love. :D
