Well, I was wondering if NIC cubes would workfor outside... They dont have cages but we have hangings in the shedthat my cousin is building at the new house. And when I start breedingagain I am going to need more cages. NIC cubes are cheap and you canmake lots of small cages out of them. I just neeed to know what youthink and if they would last long and outside.!! Well, let me know!

Are you looking for wire-floor cages?Because you can't use the grids as a wire floor, the spaces are toobig. They would need a solid surface to sit on,too. If they are in a secure shed it might be okay (don'tquote me on this cause I don't have outside rabbits) but if it's notsecure or if it won't be inside the shed then I'd say no. I'dworry about a neighbor's dog getting at the rabbits.

I know there is a thread in the Rabbitry about sources for inexpensive breeding cages. Have you looked at those?

Well they will have to be wire flooringbutI often use grass mats or wood for flooring... Plus wehave lots of extra tiles that go in during the hot months. Yes, theshed is secure. My cousin is a carpenter and he is making it right now.The fences around the yard are secure because it is a "community"place. Plus, my neighbors havent moved in on one side and the otherdoesn't have a dog. There are going to be locks on the door (we havehad reports of people stealing rabbits, pretending to be interested andthen going out there and stealing the stock!!) What should be used asthe flooring then if the wire grids are to big... Buy wire and place itover the bottoms, would that work?

This is something I posted on another site andthought I would ask here. I think it pretains to the above question soI just thought I would post it.

Well, I am moving across state and had to sell my babies and rabbits tomake room for the move. But now that the move is almost over and thingsare settling down again I am getting to buy more mini rexes to breed. Ibreed Red Minis. They are so pretty and I have so much fun. And on the8th I am buying 2 reds for $50 in Belton. And on the 22nd I am buying abroken red and a solid red (kits) for $60. I cant wait till they joinus and I will be able to breed the older ones and show the youngers!!

Just one question; How big are your cages if you breed mini rexes? Mynew place has a small backyard and my cousin is building a shed for us:bow: to go around the rabbits but I was wondering how big the cagesneed to be. It will be a total of 6 rabbits when I get the 4 newcomers. Plus 2 will be pregnant. 5 will be staying outside (one is aneutered male holland and he stays inside). If I expect 4 babies out ofeach litter I will have 8+2+2+1=13 rabbits staying outside. Plus, oncethey get older I will probably sell off some and keep more. Which meansI will be needing more room. I was thinking I could use NIC cubes forcages because the cages will be hanging cages anyways. But will theselast? Does anyone have an idea? Thanks for listening and let me know!!

Now that I think about it, this is what you would need for outdoor NIC cages:

-Wire floor. A rabbit's leg can easily fit through an NIC cube, and then you're just asking for trouble.

-Metal or wood supports for the top, bottom, and possibly thesides. Plus tons of zip ties. The connectors arenot meant to support pull, they're meant to hold things up.

-Wire around the sides for the does. Babies can easily fit through the squares.

I think you'd be better off building all-wire cages. I'veseen instructions around on different breeder pages, but I didn't savethem. I know some of the breeders here have built cages- theycan probably find the instructions for you. They areinexpensive, too.

I am not sure what you have as far as stores inyour area, but Farm and Fleet carry caging supplies so you couldcustomize what you want for a much cheaper price than most places Ichecked. FYI the zip ties won't withstand outside conditions, so youwould need to purchase cage clips (metal clips) for the cage. They workgreat for a sturdy indoor cage but a determined animal or personwanting to get in could easily snap them.good luck to you, I amsure you will do great.baci
