I recently got a bun who ended up having bunny syphilis. My rabbit savvy vet thought it would be a good idea to treat my new bunny and my previous rabbit who was not exhibiting signs of syphilis. The treatment is a 7 day round of penicillin shots for each bunny.

Day 1: The vet did the shots, the penicillin clotted a lot of syringes, very frustrating for her.
Day 2: The vet did the shots again but used a different needle which seemed to do the trick. The next day would be a Sunday (they were closed), she packed me some syringes and medicine.
Day 3: I administered them myself, the shots went fine, both bunnies received the amount they should.
Day 4: The vet administered shots again, packed me a 3 day supply of syringes and medicine.
Day 5: Bunny with syphilis got required dose, other bunny's syringe clotted. I decided to try again tomorrow.
Day 6: The bunny without syphilis had a clotted syringe again. It looked like there was not enough penicillin so I decided to give my bunny with syphilis his injection. There was only enough for 2 lines, when it was suppose to be 2 and a half lines.
Day 7: Ran out of penicillin and still waiting for a call from the vet.

Question is: Did the bunny with syphilis receive enough medication or should I be calling the vet again to make sure he gets that extra half line, and the last dose?

The vet suspected that it may not be syphilis but rather some type of bacterial infection of the nose/lips so that's why I wasn't as concerned for my previous bunny.

Thanks so much for your help,
Kim

Not sure what you mean by "lines". Are you referring to the markings on the syringe? You should ask the vet, I think. It sounds like your bunny without syphilis missed two dosages though.

I assumeyoustored the med in the frig...penicillin gets thick when it's cold, Letting the syringe sit out until it's at room temp should help thin it out, but sometimes you need to change the needle to a bigger gauge. That's the problem we had administering Pen in the past.

Once a penicillin treatment [or any antibiotic] treatment is begun, it must be continued for the required time if there was a bacterial infection in the first place. I'm so leery of assuming a bacterial infection that I wouldn't give it to any rabbit [or person] without a test to confirm that it's a bacterial infection & what meds to use for that particular bacterium. So I'm not sure what to tell you at this point, except start giving both of them a probiotic such as benebac to restore the good bacteria that the penicillin has killed.

I showed up at the vets office and the vet said that the textbook states 5-7 days of treatment so she said that the bunny with syphilis it is right in the ballpark anyways.

As for the 2 line thing, it was .25 mL, so it should have been 2 and a half lines but he only got 2 lines.

The vet confirmed that it is fine and since the nose scabs seem to be clearing up then everything is okay she said.

She was about 99% sure it is syphilis due to my bunnys sore and raw penis along with lip and nose scabs.

Thank you!
