We need some serious help with our bunnies!!! We have 2 dwarf bunnies we have had since they were 8 weeks old. We thought we were doing everything right attention wise. We held them all the time when they were little and gave them lots of love. But now after 4 months, They want nothing to do with us except when we feed them. They don't let us pet them, or even come close. They are indoor bunnies and for the most part box trained. We have no other pets so we don't know why this is happening. Can anyone tell me how to make them more friendly? And make them less grumpy? Please help!!:?

They go through a horrendous teenage phase. Are both spayed/neutered? I have to assume they are, but how long ago?

They will calm down with time, and normally I recommend letting the rabbits come to you and just socialize with them as much as possible at ground level... but with dwarfs, I've done okay with picking them up.

With all bunnies, I like to sit on the floor, put the bunny on my lap and offer a tiny treat. A bit of apple skin, a single oat... As soon as the bunny struggles, though, I let them go. I just keep repeating this. My two dwarfs are my friendliest bunnies by far.

Pipp was a single bun and bonded to me, so she doesn't count.

But with Sherry, she was a cage aggressive, grunting, charging, snotty little thug. It took awhile, but even though she was bonded to Dill and now Marvin, she came around. Now she's always coming up for pets. She always comes when she's called. She's a sweetheart.

But first you have to make it through those terrible teens. You have my sympathy there!

Pipp went from being the sweetest little baby to a holy terror at about six months. She was peeing on my bed, destroying my clothes and terrorizing the cat. She got spayed and a month or so later, she was the sweet little girl again.

Hang in there!

Pipp gave some really good advice!

She's totally right about the "teenage" years. Rabbits can be total jerks when they are about 6 months till about a year. I have noticed that most of my rabbits start getting super calm at about 18 months to 24 months old. It may stink right now, but hang in there!

And food is definitely a good motivator. A nice healthy treat that they love. I normally start by offering it, and then while they eat sneak in a little pet. And then start petting longer and longer. Then, most of them come to enjoying the pets with out the treats.

I have one bunny Zeke, who loves people, but is not the keenest on being touched. When he was young, he would get so frustrated when you tried to pet him. He thought that he had to do all the grooming, and would obsessively lick you. Once he hit about 18 months old, started to mellow out, and to accept pets. Now, at 3 years old, he loves being petted and will "puddle" for you.

This thread in the library section is also excellent and full of great information:
