I was curious...I know that you can not breed brother to sister, but you can breed father to daughter and mother to son (not that I am going to) BUT.... does anyone know if you can breed half siblings? I just recently purchased a buck but after a week together I was doing the nightly "bottom check" to make sure there was nothing icky in his fur and for some reason I still don't know decided to check him out....Turns out HE is really a SHE. Now the breeder has another litter that will be available next month, I know they have different mothers, but the breeder only has 1 buck so they will have the same father.
Can you breed half siblings safely??????

Yes it should be alright. This breeder must be a trusted though. If she has been known to have genetic problems in her herd, than I wouldn't.

Inbreeding is a good way to "set" the genetics. If none of the babies out of an inbred litter have problems (i.e cow hocks, malocclusion etc.) than you likely have no genetic problems.

But yes I've bred half siblings before without difficulty :)

^_^ lol I just asked the same question about half x half (with same father but different mother) a day or so ago. :)

You can breed what ever you want to what ever you want and chuck the "rules" out the window in order to improve your herd IF you are willing to cull hard.

Breeding half siblings can get you some of your best rabbits and some of your worst. Genetically speaking, you can end up with offspring that got all the right combination of genes from the parent most represented in the percentage of genes. In this case, the sire. Half sibling breedings will amplify the traits of the common parent - good or bad. Does that make sense?

So, yes, you can breed them and you might get some awesome offspring (if the parents (and more so, the buck) are awesome but be prepared to cull those that show genetic problems because those will be "set", too, and you do not want to pass on strong, undesireable traits.
