Hello all!

Alright, I have a lovely blue buck and a charming blacksilver martenbuck, and I have the opportunity to purchase a black doe or a blue doe. I love the blue coloring, and in my experience with blacks (in Mini Rexes), the black tends to dominate everything. But I know that breeding blue to a blue will only result inonly more blues, right? Since it is so recessive. Plus you run the risk of washing them out.

The black doe is out of a blue (out of two blacks)and a blue himi (out of a black himi and a blue himi).

The blue doe is out of a black (out of a black and a chocolate)and a himi (color not listed on pedigree, but out of a black himi and another unspecified himi).

I am leaning towards the black doe, because I want something that can go to both of those particular bucks and work well. Any opinions and thoughts are greatly appreciate, though.

I'm trying to upload photos, but it keeps saying the file is too large and I don't know how to downsize. The blue doe has better type than the black doe, and a better pedigree too.

If I am reading correctly that the black doe is out of a blue x blue himi, then the pedigree is incorrect. Two recessive blues cannot produce a dominant black.

The pedigree says that the black doe that I could potentially buy is out of a blue sire (who is out of a black sire and a black dam) and a blue himi dam (who is out of a black himi sire and a blue himi dam).

Even with all that black further up the family tree, does it still not seem possible?

The pedigree is wrong then.

A Blue X Blue crossing can NOT give you blacks. It doesn't matter if there were blacks in the background ... blue is recessive and when bred to blue - it can not give you black.

OK, thanks for clearing that up for me. I knew that was the rule for selfs but I wasn't sure if it was complicated by the presence of himis. So in this case, if I crossed my blue buck to this blue doe, I would only get blue himis or solid blues.

That's a little too restrictive for me so I guess I have to pass on this offer, since the black is not quit up to the standard that I prefer. It's too bad!
