Are there any topics you wish we'd discuss - like genetics or the finances behind running a rabbitry or things like that?

Youth breeders - are there certain topics that would interest you? Perhaps how to get adult breeders to take you seriously...or how to get to shows when you're dependent on others or how do you get your breeding stock, etc. if you have to depend on others for $$.

genetics is a good one Peg I think there is always more to learn on that lol

I think a simple comprehensive getting started breeding or setting up your rabbitry would be good as there is so much to learn and I know we have had things in the pinned section but perhaps something shorter utilising some of that info would be good.

finances is a big one and very interesting to know how different people deal with it especially the difference in countries price wise etc as over here it perhaps wouldnt be such a cost to get to a show well except for maybe sabine who has to come over from Ireland for shows.

perhaps something about peanuts genetic anomilies that can cause problems and how to deal with them I know we have had a few peanut posts in the past year and with a lot of people having dwarf breeds it can cause quite an issue and be quite upsetting as well perhaps with some pics and warnings on it :)

how to choose a breed for starting out again I know the library is good but perhaps 1 post with the main breeds people choose and little bit about personality etc

perhaps an article about teeth problems I know not all breeds suffer but nethies are quite prone and perhaps the genetics behind it happening I know I would find that interesting t read :D

um thats me for the moment lol not sure if they are any good but its a start ;)

I was thinking that this monthly news letter, And any detailed topics about Genetics or such should be put into a sub-forum onto "The Rabbitry and Show Room" as well as been put in there but while it is in the sub-section have them all stickied and put them in an order that would make logical sense e.g. The starting the rabbitry....to....The costs involved in the rabbitry, Basically like a novel the start is at the start and the end is at the end, But in this case what comes first in priority when breeding rabbits would be the first thread then so on and so forth.

I know I'm not a breeder, But This is the section I come to the most trying to learn about genetics and breeds.

Breed ID breed ID breed ID! It's frustrating seeing posts with people dead set that their rabbit is an english spot because, well darn, it has spots! Common mistakes like that should be addressed, like how people tend to think more upright rabbits are belgian hare mixes. I think some people need to be reminded that as much as you like to think it, there are so few Belgian hares anymore that it is nearly impossible to even consider someone crossing a hare to a rex or something like that.

The one thing that bugs me most about rabbit rescues is that on their websites, everything with lopped ears is a holland mix. Everything with spots is an English spot. Everything with points is a Himalayan (that one bugs me the most lol). And anything with wool is an Angora. Not matter what. What I would like to see is breeders working WITH rescues, especially on things like that, like you see in the show dog world, but that's a whole different topic. I think it would be nice to have a breed id help page for people in that situation, thinking their broken Cali mix is a Himalayan, or their jersey wooly is an Angora.

Yeah that bugs me too even with the dogs... I am a dog person and our local shelter gets the breeds wrong

We too educate first time breeders and having your own rabbitry... like i need the rabbitry part

Okay, I'm probably going to get shot for this, but would it be possible to have a meat rabbits section? Password protected, even, so if someone doesn't want to see it, they don't have to. I just don't like having to dance around the subject because some people just don't want to hear it. New breeders need the information if they're going to be successful. It's good information to have and a knowledge based around this, whether you do it or not, is common in the general rabbit community.

I'm also wondering if we could get a for sale section? It's another thing we are afraid to post because many pet people are offended by it, but it's another thing. Breeders aren't going to go to the shelter looking for good breeding stock, you know?

Forgive me if my ideas are a little over the line. I just think these would help as a means of appealling to the general breeding populace. :)

Erin,

The idea of a separate section for meat breeding has been discussed before by mods/admins, etc - but I highly doubt we will ever see a section like that on this forum. For one thing - it would go against what the forum stands for as meat breeding is one discussion we don't allow at all. Also - we are already unusual in the fact that we have a section for breeders - and it seems like what we have now is probably what we'll always have.

With that being said - the problem of a password-protected section is that someone would wind up sharing (or guessing at) the password and we'd wind up having non-breeders responding and/or simply reading (and possibly passing around) information that was shared.

As far as a section for sales, etc. - that has been discussed too. I have a hard time seeing it happen - but I suppose it could. Of course - folks are always free to contact someone via. pm if they've listed they've had a new litter or something...or even just look at the breeder's listing I'm working on and pm for information about getting rabbits.

I mainly wanted to let you know though that if these don't happen - it isn't because it hasn't been discussed before.

Misty, what would you like to see as far as starting rabbitries go? We need to get a feel of what you'd want information on in order to help you. ;) Being specific with us will definitely help us give you the information you need!

Emily

Folks - I haven't forgotten about this at all - but I've spent much of this week getting everything set up for my new girls to fly in from CT and today I'm getting things ready - so anything that requires "thinking" means I'm pretty much useless as all I have on my mind right now is my new girls coming in.
