I was just wondering if any breeders have a program that would help those customers who want to get their bunnies spayed/neutered when they're old enough. Breeders probably could get a volume price the way animal shelters do & pass along the savings to the buyer. This would be an advantage to the buyer, which might get the breeder more customers.

That is a great idea! I'm sure that would bring a lot more people to breeders for bunnies! I know for us, the draw of going to a rescue is the low fee and the fact that they are already fixed or will get a voucher to be fixed... because it's costing us a fortune with cookies nueter!

I think it might be good but only if that breeder has connections. If its a large scale breeder who more self treats their rabbits instead of taking them to a vet chances are paying for spaying and neutering wont ever be a thought in their mind.

I work at 2 vet clinics in houston and have gotten one of my pet bunnies neutered for a friend that i knew but only that once. My vet doesnt see rabbits outside of me but she used to work at an exotic clinic. I wouldnt feel comfortable asking for her to spay a rabbit just because of the higher risks. But she has performed two neuters for me.

Another thought when you say a volume price? Do mean along the lines of a bulk discount? If it is a breeder who isnt just trying to make money which most of them are never in it for that and who are actually trying to better their breed then the number of pet quality animals that are produced should be low.

Really good idea. I'll have to talk with my Rabbit Vet to let him know what I'm doing. As I am not going to be breeding MANY I hope to get show quality more than pet quality rabbits. But if someone should want one of my rabbits as a pet, I will make sure that a spay/neuter is in line.

Good idea LC. Definitely something to look into.

PS: I'm not in this for the money. I'm in this for the benefit of the Lion Head.

Sounds like a good idea, but I doubt most breeders worry about neutering or spaying so they may not have many connections. Since the rabbits they will keep will breed and the ones they don't, get sold.

Some shelters also do low cost spays/neuters, depending on your area. That's what I did with Harvey.

Agree, the breeders whose sales are primarily for pets could offer this, when the rabbit is old enough. The breeders I know focus on show quality rabbits so there wouldn't be enough referrals to offer discounts, assuming they have a connection. As someone said, breeders usually self-treat their rabbits unless they need a prescription only available from a vet.

The only thing I know of is some breeders have a little note about neuter/spays in their sales policies, and so if you buy a rabbit, get it spayed/neutered and give proof to the breeder, they will give you back a small refund or something like that.

I doubt breeders have that big of connections with vets that would help their customers get cheap neuter/spay surgeries. Giving referrals could *maybe* get you a discount, but it doesn't necessarily help the breeder out in anyway whatsoever.

I actually contacted Patti of Gainesville Rabbit Rescue on this forum because I saw that she was located right near me. She actually had a deal worked out with a local vet and said that I was welcome to refer our buyers to her for the low-rate spay/neuter she offered. It has wound up being a wonderful thing! Our clients love that we can refer them to someone who is rabbit-savvy and will do it for a reasonable price, and we get a real peace of mind out of it that we can help our clients and give them the life-long support that we promise.

Great news, Grace. It seemed to me that too many people who got rabbits from breeders found they couldn't afford the neutering, which could impact the rabbit's health. And I know I'd rather get a bunny from a rabbitry with this arrangement than from one that didn't.

I think this is a great idea and one my husband and I have talked about recently. You figure for the breeders who have bucks that don't sell to pet homes for whatever reason tend to get them neutered rather than afford cages for each. Part of this is only having a responsible amount of litters that your given rabbitry can handle, but if the vets would have a neutering day for the folks who have purchased a rabbit, they'd make a crapton of money...

Yes, since I'm not going to go "Wild" with breeding, I'll make sure the contract states neutering/spaying or bring them back.

I'm feel it's my responsibility to make sure my Pets and Show animals are well taken care of.

But that's just me.
