I've been debating breeding Basil. She is my minirex who everyone who sees her thinks she is just beautiful and Iactually have 6 people who are wanting her babies, if she hassome. According to the breeder I got her from, she is showquality, but I'm not sure I'm going to show her...I'm debating thisalso. I'm really looking forward to the next chat to learn alittle about showing and I'm going to attend a local show in a coupleof weeks, just to see...

Anyway, I saw some beautiful mini rex tonight and was wondering whatcolor would be best to breed her with. Is there a web sitewhere I can look to see what colors people are recommending?Or a good book?

I'll attach a picture of her, but she is also in my avatar.

Thanks,

Jen

Well, the votes for breeding her are addingup. I just talked to my brother's girlfriend and her littlegirl would like to help for a 4-H project. Then she couldkeep one of the babies for showing in 4-H.

You do realize that I am only 2 states away from you and bunnynapping would be a breeze!!!!!! ?

You are going to kill me if you have little babies from her! I want more bunnies!

Yeah but he's neutered!!!!! :(

I'm sorta regretting that move LOL!

However, today I saw some bunnies in TSC and they were spraying OUTSIDEthe cages onto people LOL! The store owner and I were talking about howhe could fix the situation. I'm gonna take him a litterpanthat Bo doesn't use anymore for the babies ....

He let Lexi hold all 4 and said she can come play with them all she wants :)

AWWW!!! LOL.. i would have taken one of those babies! LOL

thats soo funny about the Pet store! LOL.. that guy sounds really nice! you gonna take one home?? LOL

Well it was Tractor suppy (farm store) butno. Believe me, she tried and so did he! He GAVE us a big REWboy for FREE...... but I said I couldn't :(

This boy was licking Lexi's finger! He was about 5 mos old and twiceBo's size but not sure what breed (some type they use for meat bunnies:( )

He had some others that were marked like Lenci, but he said they wereNethies....... they had long ears..... I don't think he or the farmerknew what they had LOL! They all had pink/red eyes.

Man! Bo woulda liked to visit Basil and have some fun! lol. Ithink he and she would have had cute babies too! Her pretty colors willthrow gorgeous babies no doubt!

Wahhhhhhhhhhhhhh :(

Well, I've decided to do it. I'm goingto look at 3 possible bucks tomorrow. I actually saw them acouple of days ago, but I'm really going to check them out.I'm excited. I'm sure I will post a million things once Ibreed them. I'm going to wait until we move because I don'twant to try to move a pregnant doe or new kits. I'll postpictures if I come home with one.

Bo B Bunny -- I bet Basil would love Bo. She loves all mybuns. If you are interested in a kit when the time comes, Ibet we could work something out. Shawn's brother lives inTerre Haute.

AWW for **FREE**?! lol.. if i were Lexi i wouldhave been like "Well who cares what dad thinks!!" i've act. said thatmany times before! LOL!

omgosh! Bo and Basil would have VERY cute Kits! i'd come allllllll they way From Minnesota to where you live for a kit! LOL

youre going to do it? great!:( since bo is a castor which is an agouti and basil is a selftricolored, you would get agouti tris which i think would look reallyweird but might pass under an inattentive judge. :( rememberwhen breeding tris you will get some harlies or brindles which areunshowable but make great pets! when you decide which buckyou are going to get let us know, it will be fun to predict what shethrows! tri genes are aa B_ C_ D_ ej_ Enen

what does she have on her pedigree in terms of color?

here is my previous post. good luck and have fun--and dont let those dreaded first litters discourage you!

"i don't know what her genetic background is but to a tri a black, blue, chocolate, or even lilac would be fine, or a broken of thosecolors, or another tri. a Harlequin would be ok just stayaway from agouti such as opal, castor, lynx, and tan patterns like otter(which is currently unrecognized in Mini rexes.) REW might befine but it depends on what the rew carries. staw away fromBEW. tort would be ok. if you breed to a broken you will onlyget roughly 50% showable."

I agree that breeding with colors such as castor, lynx and chin is abad idea due to the fact that pairing can produce those colors withharli markings on the belly,

However -- Tri is an agouti, not "aa". It is neverrecommended to breed tris to any self colors (tort, black, blue, lilac, chocolate, etc.)because that produces the "torted" aka"shaded" tris which is also a DQ.

Best bet is to breed to another Tri (although may produce somecharlies), harlequin (harlis aren't showable, but are used in tribreeding programs) or breed to red.

Well, I just got back from looking at somebucks. I didn't get one though, I honestly wasn't overlyimpressed. I'm going to contact the breeder I got her fromand see if she has any possibilities. I'm also going to do aweb search.

I was thinking red would be a good color to breed her toalso. So I think that's what I'll look for. I wouldlove to get another tri, I just adore that coloring. I have afew people who are interested who aren't interested in showing, so theywould go for any coloration that was produced. It was myniece's interest that finally pushed me to do it, so I'll have her lookinto what she could show for them. I don't know if theyaccept different things or not? I've never dealt with 4-Hbefore.

Jen

Most 4-H breed shows follow the ARBA standard, although many also have "utility" or mixed breed classed for unacceptedvarieties and breeds.

When breeding tris, you will get harli marked kits that are not showable, but that can be used in tri breeding programs.

Pam

Thanks Pam for all the advice. I'mgoing to go to the show on Sat and look for a red or anothertri. I really love the tri coloring, so I know I would bedrawn to that. I'll keep everyone updated.
