we have a male and female rabbit. We got them as young rabbits December 2012 and they were kept together, bonded. They mated in May and we had a surprise litter one morning. A few didn't make it, but 2 did and then there were four.

The family of 4 were all living happily together but then mama rabbit became pregnant again in August and the entire litter didn't make it. We removed Dad to his own cage next door where they could sniff each other through the cage.

We built a new, larger cage for the mom and 2 young rabbits who were growing quickly and an accident happened with the latch and the 2 babies got out never to be found.

Now Mom seems depressed. We would like to have another litter when safe (remember, she had one litter in June and another very soon after in August) but have no idea how to go about the logistics of the bonding and if it's okay to just reintroduce mom and dad and if so, which cage.

Furthermore, if we have one more successful litter we are choosing to spay or neuter at that point so would it be possible for dad to live with mom again in the same cage? I don't want any of them to be lonely or to not have their space if needed but do not know how to determine/decide. New to rabbits, any advice with be appreciated, open to criticism as I am aware that I am making mistakes... just trying to navigate the future

I'll be honest, if you were keeping them together then the first litter they had really shouldn't have been a surprise...it was going to happen eventually. Breeding should be planned and, yes, back-to-back litters are very hard on the doe. As long as neither is fixed, they aren't truly bonded, imo. Also, the buck should not be allowed near the doe or her litter of kits. How old are the two adults?
