I have only had one thing happen to Casper (our pied dove) that I've needed help with - and she ended up having a blood feather in her face! I pulled it and it was fine.

Tonight she got a feather caught in a toy and she broke it off. It has bled pretty heavy but I got the bleeding stopped with pressure and flour.

Lexi held her and she calmed down and almost fell asleep but we had to eat dinner so we put her in her cage - in her "nest" which she loves.

She's sitting on the edge and sleeping - which is ok but she's not looking like she feels great.

Is there anything I should do? or worry about? Her feet color looks fine. She perked up when I went and talked to her - she even hopped over and got a drink and laughed a little.

I HAD THIS HAPPEN

With my cockatiel, Tyson. I was so worried because I didn't know why he was bleeding, 'till I did rushed research on this and found out he broke a blood feather. My mom held him down while I pulled it, and then he stopped bleeding.

He bled a good bit, about 2 quarter sizes, but he turned out ok.

If she seems fine, I wouldn't worry about it. If she didn't loose too much blood, she should be fine. If she starts getting worse though, I'd phone a vet.

Hope the poor birdy feels better. :(

Hi there! Is the end of the feather still in her skin? I don't know anything about pigeons, but with cockatiels and other parrots, the broken feather needs to be removed. We've had to do this a couple times with my cockatiels. We get something ready to stop the bleeding (flour and tissues to hold pressure), one person holds the bird on it's back and support the wing if the feather is on the wing, and the other uses pliers to get a good grip on the feather right at the base and gently but firmly pulls it out in the direction it grows. When the feather is out, the person who pulled it applies a little flour and pressure with the tissues to stop the bleeding. I know that pigeons have super fragile skin, so I'm not sure if this would work for one and I don't want to give bad advice. Good luck to you and little pidgey!

Thanks guys! Gosh I hate having to pull her feather :( I heard that might be the case. She isn't bleeding anymore but I might zip her over to our exotics vet and have them do it. Casper is cooing and all that today again.

So, eventhough she broke a feather - it was a blood feather that needs pulled? I had just trimmed her wings the day before then she caught that one in her mirror toy and broke it. We found the other part of it. :(

We've had her for like 9 years this month. She laughs just like me and everyone laughs because of it! then she laughs and they laugh........ you get the idea.

LOL

My pied dove also laughs. I love them.

But yes, a broken feather needs to be removed and it is best to have a vet do it. You can ask them to show you if it ever happens the next time but they usually recommend you to take them in as they can bleed a lot. It wouldn't be dangerous for another animal, but birds can bleed too much even from a simple toenail.

So I suggest you take it in :)

Do they ever pull those feathers themselves?

We looked at Casper and we can't find the feather. She broke it off pretty close from what we can tell. She's fine tonight...... hopping, cooing, eating, laughing. We held her a couple of times today and just made sure and she did ok.

Thanks! She's been her normal self and looking at her you'd never know.

She's such a character anyhow!

I have 2 turtledoves... They are at my parents though... :)One is a laughing dove and she is just hilarious. The first time we heard her laugh we all looked at each other suspiciouslythinking one of us had laughed and was joking around. It was funny to realize it was a bird :pI had soooooooooo many babies. I had like 11 turtledoves at one point! I intend to have a large aviary when we get our lil farm if we can.

Maybe the whole thing came out. It's better if that is the case. I am happy she is doing well :biggrin2:

Thanks! I'll get some better photos later. See that "bowl" she's in? we got it for her to have for a water dish/bath cause she always tried to bath standing on her water bowl. We put water in it and she wouldn't go near it. When we just left it empty - it became her nest. She's such a dork! But she's one of the sweetest and cleanest birds I've ever seen. She also lays the cutest little ivory colored eggs! :p
