I am in need of some new hay. The stuff that I am currently using is almost 2 years old. Where is a good place to get some? I can not buy a bale of hay because I live in a cramped 2nd floor apartment. I can only spend at most $10-$12 on a bag. Any suggestions??

Some feed stores will sell their hay by the flake instead of by the bale. My feed store will sell a few flakes to me in a big trash bag. If you call around you might find a store that would do something similar.

I agree that would be the cheapest way to go. Pet store hay isexpensive. Ask the feed stores around you about either selling flakes or maybe a mini-bale. We get horse quality coastal hay.

I bought Oxbow Timothy hay at the petstore because I was desperate, Bugsy hates it and Oreo pees on it. They both prefer the hay that I thought sucked. I haven't had the chance to get to the feed store, hopefully next weekend. .

Do you know anyone in your area with rabbits or horses? They might be willing to split a bale with you or have a way for you to get a few flakes at a time. I store hay in my garage for some friends who don't have much storage space and they just come get what they need.
If you don't know anyone who can help, you could even buy a bale, keep 1/2 of it and donate the other half to a rescue or something. It would still be cheaper than bagged hay while being easier to store (1/2 a bale can fit in some plastic bins) and you can help out needy bunnies.

I do not know hardly anyone around. I only know one person who would have the space. I just left a message asking her. There are no rescues around. There is a pound but that is just for dogs and cats (I think that they euthenise most of what come in). I live in a VERY small town. (when school is in secession the population of the town doubles.)

Just herd from my friend who has a house. She said that I could keep a bale at her house. Now I have to find a place that sells Timothy hay. If I can not find any timothy what would be the next best hay?

I have raised many litters of babies with not ever giving them alfalfa. They do just fine on timothy. She might not give birth. It is a 50-50 chance that she will. I am just preparing in case.

A bale of alfalfa is very expensive in SE Texas. I bought some once for my daughter's FFA goat and ended up giving most of it to a lady who raises sheep.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, you can ask for horse quality coastal hay. I try to look at what the feed store has to make sure it's green. We use that with our litters too and they do just fine.

I ended up getting a bale of costal. My friend is letting me store it in her house. A 60lb bale was $8.75. I called all of the feed stores in town and none of them had timothy.
