Benjamin got stung in the ear on the weekend. The pain from that and the heat, stopped his eating and pooing putting him into full blown GIT. After some phoning I found a rabbit vet in Winfield, about 1.25 hours away that shifted her appointments to see him. The vet here was even willing to see him and charged me for both phone calls to him. He definitely lost a client. The Vet in Winfield, checked his ear to make sure it was infected or abcessed inside, checked his teeth ( no one has ever done that ) gave him fluids with B12, x-rays, blood tests, mobility drugs and antinueasea drugs, and critical care. The have a 24- 7 line with a vet on the other end for anyone of us who are over anxious pet parents, not a $27.00 charge for a blow off on the phone. Benjamin is 14.75 pounds of pure fluffy bunny and this woman turns him gently on his back, hooks his head under her arm and he just laid there totally quiet and let her. She just phoned and his x-rays are good, blood normal. She is phoning back in a couple of days just to check on him. He came home, drank his water dish almost dry ( hardly drank for days - no wonder he was in trouble, even with me syringing fluids into him ). He is now eating a bit of hay and some greens. It was so!!!!!!! worth the drive. The bill came to just about $365 with taxes in. Not bad I thought considering his health is my top priority. Was my birthday yesterday, so told my husband he could consider this my birthday present. That got a laugh as he said I had the bank card and basically would do what I wanted when it came to BenBen The
Bunny. I will have to send Pippin this Vets name and number so that she can add it to the list. I am extremely tired as I haven't had any sleep for 2 days, he wanted to be right beside me almost on my chest when sleeping. Think I will go say of prayer of thank you and collapse.

I am so glad that you were able to get him the help that he needed; the new vet sounds awesome

You are a fantastic bunny mom :blueribbon:

Now get some :bed:

I am so glad you found help for him and that other vet should be sent a bill for wasting your time calling him equal to the bill you got from him.

I agree. I am tempted to go and tell him how Benjamin was eventually treated because he is the only Vet in town that treats rabbits. My daughter has adopted out 15 rabbits this year and at least one of them is eventually going to run into GI Statis. I think if we had a different vet, we would not have lost Paddington. This vet in Winfield treats rabbits with abcesses all of the time. It is really hard to resist the urge to go shake him. But instead I phoned today and told the reseptionist that Benjamin was eating and pooing and appearing to get better every day. I have a lot of family in this town that have dogs and cats. Personally I will never go back to him.

Wow, $27 just to TALK to a vet? I've worked at many vet clinics, and that is absolutely unheard of! Often times our vets will have a pretty huge emergency fee (to keep people from having the vet come in at 3am to trim toenails - but they usually waive it in a true emergency) but never for a PHONE call!

I'm so glad to hear that you were able to find a vet though and that he will be okay :)
