Spike got his nail caught and it fell out and he bled a lot. We rushed him to emerg and the vet says he looks okay, but wanted to put him on 2 x 15mg of Baytril for 5 days. I cannot get him to take the pills! And tips? Should I be worried about any side effects?

I am tempted not to give it to him at all, because taking it is going to be very stressful for both of us. Should I be so worried about infection that he needs antibiotics?

I should mention that the Baytril was given to PREVENT infection (which I have not read about. Seems it is usually given once there is an infection). The Vet actually says it looks pretty good right now

You definitely don't need the Baytril and shouldn't use it. You don't want to see a resistance build so it doens't work when you really do need it.

Dab some Betadine on it. Nails come out all the time, they bleed a lot but it really isn't very serious.

If its not currently infected get rid of it. Just keep it clean.

And next time you hit the vets and your bun actually has an infection... Ask them for either injectable or for them to compound the baytril to a liquid (you may need to pick it up at a pharmacy) next time

Yeah liquids are a pain as it is to give to a bun I cannot even imagine giving them a pill o_o

haha I've become a pro at giving liquids to a rabbit. But it's not the easiest thing, especially when they are feeling better. Harvey got me good on my nail once.

I've given pills to a cat. That wasn't fun haha.

Thanks for your input! I really didn't feel right giving him the Baytril. He lost a nail years ago (no blood, we just found the nail) and his regular vet didn't give us anything. Just mentioned trying to keep his area clean and keeping an eye out. At least I have the meds if an infection develops. I hope they are unnessesary though!

I looked for Betadine and could not find it. But Spike is a pretty clean little guy, and I have cleaned his pen and the areas he roams. Hopefully, that will help. I will watch him really closely for any signs the paw is bothering him.

My hubby thinks the vet may have just given me the meds because I showed up at emerg with a bleeding bunny at 1am half hysterical.

Plain old diluted Iodine :)
Personally I prefer using scrubs like hibitane, they tend to cause less irritation, which you can usually pick up at your local grocery pharmacy section. small bowl of warm water, put a bit of soap in, mix it till the water changes colour (less sudsy this way) and give the injury a little wash.
But it sounds like the areas fine. Keep an eye on it for redness or irritation, keep it clean and make sure he keeps eating :)

So Spike keeps going into hiding when I am around. He will come out for food and eats it, though not as enthusiastically as he usually does. And he runs away from the bowl if I come near him. My husband said he was acting good after I went to bed last night and even binkied a couple times down the hall. He said he doesn't seem to be favoring his foot or anything. Could his behavior just be because he is mad that I took him to the vet? It is so sad to see him hide from me now when he used to trust me completely. It breaks my heart. :-(

As far as Baytril pills go I have found that if you crush it well and mix it with carrot baby food or applesauce and give it through a syringe they will usually take it no problem. I personally prefer injectible or liquid forms of all meds with rabbits. Only exception is the powdered Benebac that I put over their veggies after they have been ill. They usually eat that right up.

I clipped Dill's nail too short once and he barely talked to me (other than to give me the flick off) for weeks.

They can be pretty opinionated.

I was heartbroken. Luckily I was eventually forgiven and we went back to being bonded mates.
